Bush faces battle in New Hampshire

By Kathleen D. Bailey
kbailey@seacoastonline.com

.
"New Hampshire is a ‘battleground state’," Wrighton said. "The election was close in 2000. Bush beat Gore by about 6,500 votes."
.

Andy Smith, also a professor of political science at UNH and director of the UNH Survey Center, said bluntly, "He (Bush) has to win New Hampshire in November."

New Hampshire has a reputation, an image as an historically Republican state, Smith said. "If he loses in his ‘backyard,’ that would say something about him as a candidate and as president as well. He has to hold every state he won in 2000."

In the last survey by the UNH pollsters, Bush and Kerry were "very close," Smith said. "Kerry had 50 percent of the voters, Bush had 45 percent, and 5 percent were undecided." In another poll Smith saw this week, Kerry was at 49 percent and Bush at 43 percent.

"In our polls Kerry is leading consistently, going back to February," Smith said.

1. I really think dimson is going to get blindsided in September.
Many of his unheralded sins are leaking into the press now after being known for years. I think AP, Reuters, and even UPI will drop some scathing evidence just before the election. It was AP that subpoenaed his National Guard records last month and then went quiet. A big disclosure in the headlines will swing the swingers, I hope.

3. I like both NH and WV to return to the DEM
column this year. Kerry campaign needs to work both hard to make sure it happens.

6. i was in NH yesterday
I took my fiancee to a municipal airport for a flight lesson for her birthday. While she was in the air I sat in the restaurant and everyone in the place was talking about how much they hated bush. No exagerration, there were at least 15 people bashing Bush around me and not a single defender. It made my day.

8. I was in a book store Tuesday

and this young clerk was very sweet.
I had my Kerry button attached to my purse as always.
I would have pegged her for a non - voter or Rethug.

Was I surprised!
I just happened to ask her if the 911 Report book was selling. She said they were flying off the shelves.

Then she just started saying how we just have to win this election. I reminded her of how important it was to vote and she said yes she would be voting.

As I turned to leave she called me back.. she said," I know I should not be saying something like this, please don't think I am a bad person. But, why does it only happen to our side?"

I truly wasn't sure what she was getting at. Then she said, "why is it they shot JFK and BK? Why is it only our side? bush is such a mean person and nothing ever happens to him!"

I was so shocked by the frustration that the young lady was feeling.I'm sure she, like we, would not mean any harm to our President. She was just frustrated by all the mean tricks and madness.

One thing that I want to believe about this generation. I believe they are far more compassionate. They know how to use the internet to find out information. They don't have to believe what they hear from their right wing parents.

Do you think I am right?

13. that girl in the bookstore..
Is expressing exactlty how I felt back then... after the long string of assasinations. I confess that I was furious that the attempt on George Wallace failed. (Now, with the maturity of many years and the subsequent enlightenment of Wallace, of course, I see things much differently). I understand the level of her frustration.

As I became aware of how many former Nixonites and Reganites were involved in this administration I was aghast. We're not up against the sons of the b*stards (with one exception), or even the political heirs of the b*stards, we are up against the SAME DAMNED B*STARDS that we were back then.

This time we cannot afford to lose. We have to go after the "non-voters" big time.

7. Gore lost NH only because of Nader's efforts
And Kerry has been leading consistantly by 5+% there.

He'll win pretty handily.

We'll also probably pick up WV, MO, and FL at the least.

9. I'll be on the ground banging on doors in NH starting next Wednesday
, and hopefully NYC for the protests, and then I'll be back banging on doors and heads in Southwest Florida after 3 weeks.

:bounce: . . . miles to go before I sleep.

Thank you floridaguy!

I hope to be back as a NH resident in time for the election, but if not I'll keep trying to change one Virginia mind at a time,,,

14. Thanks
I appreciate the encouragement :hi: Oregonian and Publichealthnut!
What I've enjoyed about this campaign is that we're all doing what we can. I'm fortunate enough to have the time to go to NH.
Others are spending their time on the phones, etc., and others are serving the cause just by talking to their family and friends or putting a bumper sticker on their cars.

We're all in this together :grouphug:
and that's why we'll win in November!

That's why I like the acronym ACT (America Coming Together)
You can find out more about ACT by visiting Beat Bush at the link below.
