This Week w/GS: Franks 'Kerry fit to be commander in chief'
When asked by George Stepanopolous, "Do you believe John Kerry is fit to be Commander in Chief?", Franks responded, without hesitation, "Absolutely".

Wonder if he'll still be speaking at the GOP convention?

3. Holy smokes, did that come out of left field or what? Never ever would
I have expected that answer from Franks.

Wonder what happened to make General Martial Law say that.

20. It's hard to believe. but..
.. there are still many, many military people who put truth before politics. Perhaps Franks is just being truthful. I know that the attacks on Kerry's service is starting to make the military (the non-rabid ones) squeamish. It could be them, next time, they eat their own at the drop of a hat.

I hope this has legs and perhaps a campaign ad.

11. Franks in Time magazine
In what I think was last week's issue---the Olympics one with Michael Phelps on the cover---Franks said he hadn't made up his mind about his presidential vote. He said he was leaning toward Bush but was undecided. I was floored; I would have thought he'd be a Bush supporter all the way. He also said he hadn't been formally invited to the Republican convention yet and that his feelings were hurt that he hadn't been invited to the Democratic convention. Interesting, I thought.

9. Another example of the...
..."tipping point" theory in action. Now that it looks like Bush* will need a miracle to win, more and more pundits, pattons, and prognosticators will flock to Kerry's side.

Nobody likes to be on a losing team :)

10. I just may buy his book just for saying that
Unless I see him stooge for the repukes at their convention.

Still a MAJOR blow to the right if you ask me. Tommy is one of their darlings.

13. Tommy Franks is an intellectual
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 10:29 AM by JI7
he is very much into learning about different cultures and he enjoys poetry and all the other "liberal elitist" things bush despises.

this is how most liberal military guys, especially generals are. wes clark, shalikashvili, hoar, etc . they are all guys who have spent years in the military, but they have experience and knowledge not only on military fighting strategies, but on cultural issues also of various nations and peoples.

now tommy franks probably isn't liberal as these guys are. but he also isn't a typical right wing asshole that thinks patriotism is wrapping oneself in the flag while ignoring the truth about wrongs being commited. i imagine tommy franks is probably like senator chuck hagel of nebraksa or john mccain.

Yes, there are number of Generals who aren't fond of Bush, but there are Admirals who would vote for Anyone But Bush.

22.  "the reason we went to war."
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000588605
From the Parade "magazine"
Published: July 28, 2004

Franks, according to Parade, "believes that five years is a realistic timeline for the U.S. to be involved in Iraq." Asked why Osama bin Laden was still at large, Franks replied tens of thousands of Arab families would happily take in Osama as their hero. Frank says the U.S. will eventually nab him "even though was don't have enough sources on the ground."

Indulging in what the magazine calls "a bit of score-settling," Franks says: "I never received a single page of actionable intelligence from Richard Clarke." He also says his biggest surprise of the Iraq war was the failure to find weapons of mass destruction which he flatly adds was "the reason we went to war."

Well, to hell with Franks too!

Opinions are like rectums-everybody has one, Frank's isn't worth any more than any one else'.

How come everyone is writing books lately, anyway ?

24. How come everyone is writing books lately, anyway?
Freep's answer to that one:

I guess I'm just a slow reader. I subscribe to a daily and a twice weekly news paper-the daily eats up between two and three hours of my mornings. Then I listen to Rush for a while, then hit the net and scan several more dailys on line. Free Republic has me hooked for more hours a day than I care to confess to. In between all that, even though I am retired, my cgores must be done, like mowing the grass, rototilling the garden, etc., etc., paying bills, ordering prescriptions for the wife and myself, pleasing my very spoiled and demanding chihuahua, and the list goes on.

I just don't have time for reading books any more, best seller or dud.

Ya just gotta wonder who is buying all these books and if they are stocking up on them to read during the long boring hours of their retirement years. If they are, I have news for them-you are wasting your money. There is so much to do during retirement these days, that you wonder how you ever found the time for work in the first place.

Filled up bookcases do look less dull than a blank wall I suppose-but colorful wall paper would be much cheaper.

But he hates Rumsfeld (like many of the generals do), and I can't see him taking to the stump to campaign for him.

28. He may, but....
Like a lot of military men, he won't encourage the trashing of Kerry's record. The generals have more in common with each other than any of them do with most politicians.
