Jackson blasts GOP for bringing Keyes into race

August 8, 2004

BY STEVE PATTERSON Staff Reporter

Calling the candidacy of an out-of-state, black conservative "desperate," the Rev. Jesse Jackson criticized the expected announcement today that Alan Keyes will accept the Republican nomination in the U.S. Senate race in Illinois.

Jackson, a vocal supporter of heavily favored, Democratic nominee state Sen. Barack Obama, discussed the race after accepting a lifetime achievement award Saturday from the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies.

Keyes, a Maryland resident, is expected to accept the nomination today, replacing Jack Ryan, who dropped out amid a sex scandal. Keyes is a nationally known conservative radio host who has no ties to Illinois.

1. Expect anything.....
from those corrupt Republicans. Question: how can someone who has no ties to Illinois, who obviously doesn't live there, run for office?

Does that mean I get to run for governor of Alaska, even though I live in Oregon?

2. They've Done It Before
Remember how Dick Cheney was CEO of Halliburton, which is headquartered in Texas? And how a court ruled that his "official place of residence" was Wyoming so the bastard could share the ticket with Pretzelboy???

3. How Does This Square With His Criticism Of Hillary Being A Carpetbagger?
I'm not accusing Keyes of being a carpetbagger... I'll give him the same benefit that I gave to Hillary Clinton.

BUT... I wonder how do HE and HIS SUPPORTERS reconcile the fact that he's now doing the exact same thing that he gave Hillary grief for?

5. it's different from Hillary though
She actually moved to New York a year ahead of time and won her primary, rather than being recruited to save them from embarassment less than three months away.

But I have no idea how he'll reconcile the "decline of federalism" quote :-)

6. Hillary and Bill were leaving the White House
They did not have a home in Arkansas to go back to! They were able to move to any State they wanted to.

Keyes is deep in debt from his last campaign run and his house in Maryland has a lien on it. Russ interviewed Hasturd this morning and his reason why Illinois is unable to select a Republican candidate is that it takes millions to run for office???? My question is......who is funding Keyes??????

If I lived in Illinois I would really be pissed. This is not selecting a representative who will represent his/her home state consituents. This is shear DC Power at play.

How many of our elected officials who go to DC to represent us (ha, ha), ever come back to thier home state to retire or do good things for the State that gave them a wonderful opportunity????? Very few, they have dined at the throne of power and are addicted. They are now called lobbyists.

"The poor die, and the rich get oil," he said. "There's just something ungodly about that."

Well said.

10. What I understood Hastert to say on
Meet the Press this morning, was that they could not find anybody to run. Like when your quarterback gets in trouble, you go to the next one, and then the next one, and Alan Keyes was the only one left who would run. About what Keyes said about Hillary carpetbagging, Hastert said "We all say things that we later regret". So I guess that makes it alright.
