John Mellencamp turns political; joins coalition bent on defeating Bush
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP)

John Mellencamp has joined a coalition of musicians trying to unseat President George W. Bush, but the rocker says that doesn't mean he has anything against Republicans.

"If there was a Democrat in the White House, and this was going on, we'd still be doing this," Mellencamp told The Herald-Times of Bloomington in an interview published Sunday. ..

.. Mellencamp said a growing intolerance for opposing viewpoints in this nation inspired his participation in the "Vote for Change" series of 34 shows in 28 cities.

Mellencamp, a southern Indiana native, has written songs on social issues, such as "Pink Houses" and "Rain on the Scarecrow." He co- founded Farm Aid in 1985 with Willie Nelson and Neil Young.

1. well, he's been following Springsteen his whole career
might as well now too.

(that was a joke, I like Melloncamp, just think he's a lightweight version of Bruce).

3. I wish the songs were as good
as they used to be. He really hasn't had a great album in over a decade.

13. Actually, he's always offered a different brand of rocknroll from Bruce.

4. Maybe its time
To roll out Bob Dylan. I know Dylan is getting up there in years, but with “protest” music going on it seems appropriate he’d be there.

Whatever the case, thank god for these musicians who are putting their ass on the line. Folks like Bruce and REM really have nothing to lose. They are so popular anyway, so above corporate reprisals and the rock fan is generally not as knee-jerk as the Country fan.

I would not “ban” a record, burn a record, or get rid of a record done by a Conservative if I liked their music. That is the chief difference in the right and left…I may hate the politics of a band, but if they rock then Im down with it…the righties are so against dissent of their paradigm they would be the idiots who would get rid of all their music that happens to be done by Liberals….

Which is a really sad state, because if you did do that you’d be left with basically garbage.

5. Sorry, I don't agree.
I refuse to give someone more money if they champion causes I abhor. The RWers do it, true, but I can speak my mind financially as well.

Granted, most music put out for the RWers is complete crap, but even if it wasn't, I wouldn't buy it.

I consider myself open-minded, but I won't put money in someone's pocket that they can give to selfish, self-serving causes like the RNC, Neocon politicians, Pro-life groups, etc.

Examples of stuff NOT in my record collection: Sammy Hagar or any Van Hagar, Kidd Rock, Charlie Daniels, Toby Keith

I also don't go see Bruce Willis or Arnold Schwarzenegger movies either. I can wait til they're on network TV if I want to see them that bad. But I usually don't.

be in any of my collections. Let's face it, they are all really bad!

The only thing Charlie Daniels ever did that was any good was THE DEVEL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA, and that was somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty or so years ago!

And it was 25 actually. 78 or 79. I should know...I was rolling around the skating rink to it in 7th grade. :-)

6. What a freeping misleading headline!
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 10:18 AM by khephra
"Mellencamp, a southern Indiana native, has written songs on social issues, such as "Pink Houses" and "Rain on the Scarecrow." He co- founded Farm Aid in 1985 with Willie Nelson and Neil Young."

TURNS POLITICAL? Even the article itself points out that he's been involved with Farm Aid from the start. If that's not being political, I don't know what else is.

I guess 19 years is overnight for the author of this newspaper's headline (Not you, Nambe, of course :-) ).

12. Ok, I can see where they might get away with that headline
""I wasn't very politically active before this administration," Mellencamp said. "I had political views, but I always used to say, 'I don't want to hang on anybody's cross or stand on anybody's soapbox. Whatever I need to say, I'll say in my songs.' But things are different now.""

Still, I think they're wrong in using that headline. It's way too misleading.

He turned anti-Clear Channel with the last CD. You'd think he'd be open-minded to something like this by now, too.

He may be the most prolific songwriter that most people don't know from silt over the last decade.
