NYT: G.O.P. Plans Spectacle to Jazz Up Convention
When the curtain goes up on the Republican National Convention on Aug. 30, the supporting cast will include gospel- and country-music performers, elaborate videos, and celebrities doing what they can to help market President Bush's ideas and vision for America, one of the convention's organizers said yesterday.

But the convention will present not only politicians and celebrities on each of its four days. People from around the country have been invited to offer an invocation or benediction or to make some other short statement, said Frank Breeden, the convention's director of entertainment, who called this aspect of the program "Preachers and Patriots."

The Republicans are hoping that their convention, in New York, can help give their candidate the significant bounce in the polls that eluded the Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry, after the convention in Boston. And so the party hired Mr. Breeden, a former president of the Gospel Music Association renowned in the Christian music industry, to help produce a show that carefully weaves the party's political message with a mix of music, star power and patriotic symbolism.

(snip)

Mr. Breeden described some challenges in trying to find celebrities for the G.O.P. event. He said that on many occasions he found there were entertainers who supported the president, or Republican ideas, but who felt their careers would be hurt if they made that support public. Mr. Breeden identified the actor Ron Silver as someone who expressed that opinion to him, although Mr. Silver said that was not exactly the case.

7. Opps, did they just out Ron Silver for NOT wanting to appear
at their party? If the guy said he thought it might hurt his career if he openly supported Bush*, then wouldn't it make sense to keep that info, and the name to yourself?

Oh wait, never mind. They can't even seem to do that with CIA operatives either, can they?

Why, this will be the most significant and spectacular national convention in our country's history, as the man who stood up to the September 11 terrorists is nominated again by his party, and acclaimed by a grateful nation as its Greatest President Ever!

And anyone that says different just hates Amurika!

I saw him earlier this year on Bill Mahr, spouting all this Conservative stuff & I'm like, wait a minute, Bruno Gianelli - the man who helped a liberal like Jed Bartlett get re-elected - is a Right Winger?

I know I shouldn't confuse actors with their roles, but it just seemed odd that a Right Winger would shill for such a liberal cause

Time to check IMDB.COM. Sounds like a porn name to me.

Well, he's certainly been in quite a few movies and TV shows - the only one that I've seen is "Oh, God! You Devil!"

Big time name there. Kind of reminds me of Rick Santorum getting his celebrities - Marvin Winans, Darrell Green, Dean Jones, and Pat Boone up on a podium to denounce gay marriage a month or two ago. When I saw that picture I went, "Who, who, who, and what the hell is Pat wearing - a pink shirt and an orange suit coat? Fabulous, girlfriend!"

The GOP is NOT making a play for average America. They have already conceded the middle along with the undecideds to Kerry. They are playing to every nutcase right winger and evangelical they can find. This is just further proof of that. This convention will not apppeal to normal people and its not intended to. They want to reach as many crazies as they can find.

If you believe Jesus and God are working through Bush, you'll find the GOP convention entertaining.

54. Perhaps some night bonfires like Nuremburg. Watch for it
Of course, these Night Spectacles will be updated not only for modern Imperial sensibilities but will have been psychoengineered to AVOID connottaions with Totalitarianisms past.

However, the Busheviks have borrowed so much of the Nazi, Soviet, and Imperial Roman Playbooks, it would make perfect sense for them to borrow this on, too.

Torchlight processions, anyone?

(Naaah! That would be poor Marketing and PR)

57. Isn't Kid Rock
going to sing his one song? And maybe he'll wear his slashed up American flag poncho which was so fetching at the Super Bowl.

60. Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies......................
..the travlin' tent show. Their playing for their red state goobers!! Even less will be watching this than the Dem Convention. Some people tuned in to see the Dem convention other than just the faithful because they didn't know anything about Kerry. Everyone has the "smoke 'em out" and "mission accompished" lines downpat and are not going to waste time trying to listen to Bush get to the end of a sentence. Not a good preacher man act to put on as the finale!!!---need to go get Benny Himm and have him heal a few people on prime time!! If they get "the bounce" mentioned in the article, then the polls are seriously bought and paid for by the corporations. People have already made up their minds on Bush.

64. Preachers and Patriots?
Why not Tarts and Vicars? What with all the media whores in attendance and that creepy Jerry Falwell lurking in the shadows it might as well be Tarts and Vicars.
