Keyes says Obama afraid to face him
Keyes says Obama afraid to face him

August 10, 2004

BY SCOTT FORNEK Political Reporter

Democrat Barack Obama said Monday he will engage in fewer than the six debates he previously agreed to in the U.S. Senate race -- prompting newly minted GOP rival Alan Keyes to accuse Obama of running scared and cowering "in timidity" at the prospect of facing him.

"That suggests doesn't it -- if right now they're scaling back -- a certain lack of confidence that there's any substance there," Keyes said of Obama.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-sen10.html

Actually, Mr. Keyes, you are a fringe candidate. Come back when your polls show an equilibrium between how far up Senator Obama is and what you are currently polling. At the present time, Senator Obama has a 39% margin over your paltry 28% in the polls.

When you cease being a fringe candidate, the people of Illinois can take you seriously and I'm certain Senator Obama will address your isues in a debate.

6. He did say that in the first speech of the campaign.
HE was at 28% on Saturday, before he opened his mouth.

I suspect he's only dropped in the polls since he opened his mouth.

the election.

There will be some interesting quotes from Keyes before this is over, that's for sure.

...especially with all the dead people registered in Chicago.

The really interesting question is, where is the Devil registered?

...when they can keep certain racial groups from among the living from being able to vote at all.

5. Maybe Mr. Keyes should learn about the state of Illinois...
and stop giving a rat's ass about how many debates there are. Alan Keyes is woefully ignorant about this state, and maybe he should actually learn something about the state he wants to represent in the Senate.

Your media exposure time will be short, Keyes--better you should invest it in telling the state of Illinois how wonderful you are.

11. The truth is, he had set aside August for three of the six debates
It's too late to set those up now, so there goes at least three debates.

Coordinating a debate that would ahve been the fourth debate in early September is iffy, hence his answer of two, maybe three debates.

17. Don't misunderestimate the mind of a republican...
.. my husband's co-worker listens to Rush. My husband could overhear Rush yesterday lauding Keyes as "one of the greatest orators of our time!!!!". Next thing you know... there is his co-worker, telling someone else and my husband, "I'm SO excited about Keyes running against Obama! He's one of the GREATEST orators of our time!!!".

They're clueless. They just repeat whatever bullshit Rush hands out to them. They don't know the 411 on Keyes, they just repeat what is being fed to them.

30. So he's a great orator ....
(if indeed he is - I think he's a maniac) .... Keyes is not running for Orator, he's running for Senator, and he's entirely unqualified.

Let him get up there and spew the fundie talking points, none of which relate to the issues the Illinois voters are concerned with at the moment.

Let him make a complete ass of himself, and then give Obama 15 minutes to calmly and succintly lay out his platform, smile, thank the crowd, and step away. The difference will be stunning.

Keyes will defeat himself.

18. Since Keys didn't participate in any primary process in Illinois ...
Obama has a right to skip any previously scheduled debates. Unlike Hillary Clinton who went through a primary and was elected to run in New York, Keys wasn't asked to run by the people of Illinois. He was appointed by the RNC. That makes him a carpetbagger and unworthy of debating.

26. Who wants to bet they'll put Alan Keyes up on the platform at the GOP
convention this month to try to show he's as masterful an "orator" as Barak Obama? I don't think that squeaky, insinuating voice, and a lot of insults about what demons Democrats are will get the job done.

Only a person moved by such deep feelings and beliefs, with such actual intelligence, who has such strong CHARACTER can hope to do as well.

Keyes would mop up the floor with himself.

29. "Thank you. My first question is to Ambassador Keyes."
"Ambassador Keyes,

A recent study by the National Corn Growers Association has found that the rapidly-aging lock and dam system of Illinois' waterways could endanger the competitiveness of our corn and soybean exports. According to the report, delays in opening and closing locks in the upper Mississippi River basin may have cost farmers nearly $100 million in lost business per year. Failure to address this issue may further depress the value of corn, soybeans, and wheat throughout the upper Midwest by as much as $364 million dollars a year.

If you were elected Senator, what would be the central tenets of your agricultural transportation policy, and how would you address the urgent developments in the upper Mississippi? Do you have a contingency plan in mind, if it is impractical or impossible to secure federal funding for updating the Illinois waterway system?"

and if the corn and soybean farmers of Mary...uh,, Illinois elect me and take God and his message of faith into their hearts, there will be no flooding. Except, of course, if He really, really wants to punish the ungodly and tells me to build an ark. Then, I've got to listen to him, and gather all the animals of Mary..uh, Illinois and build the ark, which is symbolic of the ark of the covenant that our Founding Fathers put this great nation on....."
