Groups File Complaint Over Anti-Kerry Ad
Associated Press

.. Democracy 21, the Center for Responsive Politics and the Campaign Legal Center argue that the ad by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth violates a federal ban on the use of unlimited donations, often referred to as "soft money," to influence federal elections. ..

.. In the complaint to the Federal Election Commission, the watchdog groups argued that Swift Boat Veterans for Truth should have used only limited contributions from individuals known as hard money on the ad and should disclose its donations and spending in reports to the FEC.

"We this think is open and shut, that the only purpose of this group is to influence the presidential election," said Fred Wertheimer, head of Democracy 21.

Mike Russell, a spokesman for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, said the ad is legal because it does not tell viewers which candidate they should vote for in the presidential race. ..

1. Isn't that the point of these 527s?
I really don't see any difference between the methods these guys are using and the ones our 527s are using.

6. Is it a 527?
If it's not, they've broken the rules right out of the gate. Also, I think 527's are supposed to focus on policy, not politics. So it's okay to run an ad about policies affecting unemployment, environment, education, etc. But not ads about the election itself. I think that's the way it is anyway.

4. How can this be sad

Mike Russell, a spokesman for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, said the ad is legal because it does not tell viewers which candidate they should vote for in the presidential race.

They say John Kerry is "unfit" to serve as President.

I would suggest they didn't say who to vote "FOR", but it's obvious who they want you to vote "AGAINST."

These people are scum.

5. Someone needs to sue these assholes for
libel or slander or whatever it is. These guys say that they "served with" Kerry and that is an out and out lie. Any vet will tell you that being in the service at the same time as someone else is NOT "serving with" that person. Bullshit...

8. The complaint is based on the one huge donation of $100,000.
That qualifies as soft illegal money.
