Kerry says Bush broke his word on Yucca Mountain nuclear waste storage

NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, August 10, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(08-10) 16:33 PDT LAS VEGAS (AP) --

Democratic presidential challenger John Kerry, making a play for a state that supported President Bush four years ago, accused the president of breaking his word with a plan to bury nuclear waste in Nevada.

Kerry said the president broke the promise he made in the 2000 race to ensure science and not politics determined his decision whether to ship waste to Yucca Mountain. Bush approved Yucca Mountain as the nation's nuclear dump site after winning the presidency, even though many scientific studies remained unfinished.

"It's about promises kept and promises broken," Kerry said.

He made his own campaign promise: "When John Kerry is president, there is going to be no nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain. Period," he said.

5. I wish they would say that about Carlsbad, New Mexico
I've always thought all the Nukes, waste and weapons, should be either kept in missile silos or dumped under the White House and Congress. It really pisses me off that they look for places with depressed economies & poor folk. People are told that prosperity will good jobs will come along with the dump. They are even trying to sell this load of crap to the Mescalero Apaches.

Oh, yes you'll finally have a good paying job, don't mind the head aches you all are having! Oh no, people don't get brain tumors from radioactive waste...but who cares if you do, you have a job! :hippie:

11. Yucca Mountain is riddled with earthquake faults
and near Las Vegas. As things stand now, the nuclear waste will have to be stored above ground for 10 years or more until the site is finished to accomodate the undreground storage...talk abotu a target!
Also, there is the problem of available water for keeping things cool.

15. I think you're confusing Yucca Mountain with WIPP:
WIPP is saltdome excavation near Carlsbad NM. Yucca Mountain is in NV.

10. The point is it is UNSAFE to move it!
I just got back from weekend in Reno nv with the sierra club talking about this. Over 200 scientists have reported that it is unsafe to move it and it would affect the ground water underneath Yucca Mountain that is only 90 miles away from vegas.

Bush promised not to do anything until the scientists gave their results then before they were done, he approved it...

What a guy! Also, they are working on a way to freeze or harden it (goes above my head!) so it would be safe to keep it where they have it now at all the various places.

Sierra Club is afraid to endorse that for fear then the repubs would use that as an excuse to open more nuclear energy sites.
