"Scientists at the University of Newcastle have been granted permission by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority to clone human embryos for medical research.

"I can confirm that we have given approval," a spokeswoman for the authority said.

It could lead to new treatments for diseases like diabetes, Parkinson's and Alzheimer."

About time IMHO

1. An interesting argument to put to anti-abortion people
and those who oppose embryo stem cell research:
as pointed out in this BBC article, there is no 'conception' involved in this procedure: they take unfertilised eggs (excess from IVF treatment), remove the nucleus (which only contained half the chromosomes needed for life), and then insert the nucleus from a cell of an adult donor (whose cells are presumably theirs to do with as they wish). The stimulated egg will then produce embryonic stem cells, which can then be used for the research, and eventually treatment, if this is successful.

So, would those who claim 'life begins at conception' include this procedure as producing new life?
