Bin Laden hints major assassination
snip-

The assassination plan is among new details of al Qaeda plots disclosed by U.S. officials familiar with intelligence reports who, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the killing could be carried out against a U.S. or foreign leader either in the United States or abroad.

snip-

Additionally, U.S. intelligence officials said they think that several al Qaeda terrorists already in the United States are part of the plot, although their identities and locations are not known.

So. It could be against either a US or foreign leader, and their identities and locations are not known.

Tell me again why they call this "intelligence?"

3. Oh B f*cking S
"The goal of the next attack is twofold: to damage the U.S. economy and to undermine the U.S. election," the official said. "The view of al Qaeda is 'anybody but Bush.'"

It's ridiculous the media lets them get away with saying this crap unchallenged. These guys are smart, they know that Bush will overreact, piss off more Middle Easterners, and they'll have more terrorists. They're also smart enough to play some reverse pyschology, too.

4. Intelligence & law enforcement agencies...
...hear this kind of chatter all the time. Separating the droplets of real information from the flood of noise is the job of analysts.

There's absolutely no point in releasing every little tidbit that comes their way, since it could be made up by some source with an axe to grind, a rumor started by a malicious prankster, old outdated trash being peddled by someone trying to scam a few bucks, or, indeed, a genuine threat. We the general public can't possibly have any idea which is which, and the more garbage that gets circulated, the less likely it is we'll be paying attention when real threats are in motion and we need to be genuinely aroused to heightened awareness and vigilance.

These leaks serve no purpose whatsoever except to scare the easily scared and bore the rest of us. They give the illusion of protection while delivering no such real thing.
