US border guard indicted for beating Chinese businesswoman
NEW YORK (AFP) - A US border guard was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday for allegedly beating up a Chinese businesswoman, in a case that was taken up at the highest diplomatic level between Beijing and Washington.

Robert Rhodes, who was charged with violating the civil rights of 37-year-old Zhao Yan near Niagara Falls in July, could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 250,000 dollars if convicted.

US Attorney Marty Littlefield said Rhodes would be arraigned in court at a date to be announced.

According to the indictment, Rhodes struck and hit Zhao with his knee and then "forcibly drove her head into contact with the pavement."

1. These guards get an inflated opinion of their power and importance.
My husband one time in Europe, when they still checked passports between countries, had our passports retained by a border guard for 15 minutes totally unnecessarily. Once he got the passports back, he started the car and said to the guy "Don't worry, you are still young enough to get a decent, self-respecting job." Then accelerated the car and left him standing there. Of course, you cannot do that now in the States... too many fascists around.

5. Border guards are just like a lot of armed police. They believe they have
a right to brutalize people...especially people of color.

7. He got the wrong woman this time.

Who knows how many times he and his buddies have gotten away with it because the victim didn't have high level diplomatic connections?

I hope everyone he has beaten hears about and joins the case.

8. One of the many scandals connectd with Immigration at
the Portland, Oregon airport was a Chinese businesswoman who spent a night in jail because the INS officials there thought that her passport looked "old." That was all. The truth was that she simply traveled a lot and her passport had been handled a great deal.
