GM Layoffs (2200 jobs - Lansing)
http://www.wilx.com/news/headlines/919317.html

More layoffs are scheduled to hit the Lansing Car Assembly Plant later this month. General Motors officials point to slow fleet sales for the shutdown.

Starting Aug. 23, the Lansing Car Assembly Plant will shutdown for three weeks until Sept. 13. GM officials say 2,200 workers will be laid off during that time.

The plant makes the Pontiac Grand Am and the Chevy Classic. GM officials say during the shutdown, there will be limited training for maintenance work at the plant.

...very short newsblurb...

1. I have a friend at Delphi 3 (Saginaw) who's being laid-off, too
Fact of the matter is that just about none of the folks in the plant are going to miss being there at the end of August thru mid-September. Between the unemployment benefits and the sub-pay, Mike figures he's out around $100/wk. Not enough, really, to make it worthwhile to go in there and sweat his naughty bits off for 40 to 45 hours.
We'll probably go catch some Tiger games, instead.
John
I'm glad these aren't permanent layoffs -- more like a small paid vacation. And, believe me, Mike's even happier than I am.

4. The UAW takes pretty good care of its members
So good that a fair percentage of them voted Republican in prior presidential elections.

Remember Macomb County, home to a lot of auto workers. It was considered THE swing county in '88, '92, and 2000.

The UAW needs to concentrate a bit more on educating its members.
