Director John Sayles' new film Silver City satirizes Bush
WASHINGTON (AP)

Although his new movie pokes fun at President George W. Bush (news - web sites), director John Sayles hopes viewers will think about politics beyond the White House.

The Sept. 17 release of Silver City was planned to affect voting - whether it's by sending people to the polls, changing their vote or merely making them think about politics, Sayles said Wednesday at a National Press Club news conference.

"We felt like it was important to make this movie and get people thinking about it," Sayles said, adding it ought to influence "elections I know nothing about." ..

It's easy to draw parallels between the movie's main character - a right- wing, first-time candidate for Colorado governor - with Bush and his run for Texas governor in 1994. Like Bush, Dickie Pilager comes from a political family - his father is a senator - he's a born-again Christian and is "grammatically challenged," as Sayles puts it.

1. I sure hope Sayles is back on track with this one.
His last couple of outings have been a) sketchy (Limbo) and b) horrible (Sunshine State). Prior to that, he was on an incredible roll (Men With Guns, Lonestar, Secret of Roan Inish, Passion Fish, City of Hope, and on and on).

2. I liked 'Limbo", etc.
"Limbo" was great and I even liked the ending (those who have seen it will know what I mean). "Sunshine State" wasn't up to his top efforts but still worthwhile viewing. You left out his very last effort, "Casa de los Babys" which examines the perils and politics of international adoption. For me, "Lone Star" is the greatest but anything by Sayles is so far above the norm for most directors with the exception possibly of Altman.

3. Casa de los Babys was pretty good
I agree about Sunshine State--not his best work but worth watching--and Lone Star. Lone Star is awesome.

4. While waiting for Fahrenheit to start, I saw the trailer for
Silver City and it looked pretty darned good. Good enough to make this 'I'll wait for the DVD to come out' person actually get up off her butt and go see it at the theater when it comes out. :)
