CNN: Bush speech drops 'turning the corner'
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/08/11/bush.corner/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush has apparently turned a corner in his use of what had been a popular refrain in recent campaign stump speeches.

Shortly after the Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, Bush hit the campaign trail to express his optimism about the country's future.

That refrain was repeated on other campaign stops. But this week, the "turning the corner" line has disappeared from Bush's speech, as Democrats seized on the words to charge that the president was out of touch.

"The last time we had a president who talked about turning the corner and ran on the slogan of turning the corner was Herbert Hoover," Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, said during a July 31 stop in Greenberg, Pennsylvania.

Some may consider this a small matter, barely worhty of notice, but in fact, Kerry's campaign has become so effective in its way that Bush has now dropped a majopr theme of his campaign.

This is huge. They are scared.

1. Ah, so now we'll hear about how Bush is struggling to find a theme?
And how people don't really know what his plan is... oh wait, for a second I thought we didn't have pundit conventional wisdom to dictate how we react to events. Clearly this is another example of strong leadership on Bush's part.

I repeat they DO NOT!!!!

Yes that would seem to be the proper subtitle "Bush fails to find theme" I wouldn't hold my breath on it though.

13. Well, if that's the case, then GOOD!!!!
Excellent, in fact! I'd like to hear and see a days or a week (dare I hope for more? Well, maybe not with the enemy convention coming up soon) of this theme - "bush is struggling to find a theme" - repeated in the media.

That would be just Superb, Superb, Superb!

The more we can paint this cabal as the gang that can't shoot straight, the better. The more frequently we can repeat this, the better. The more we can help pound that theme into the American consumer consciousness, the better. That needs to be reinforced. "Struggling." "Disarray." "Confusion." GREAT words to use for this bunch. GREAT, evocative, powerful, effective word choices that paint a clear picture of how FUBAR this White House is.

GOOD, GOOD, GOOD!

Now we all know what to do:

EXPLOIT THE cHENEYING HELL OUT OF IT!!!!!!!!!

(hint: This is an EXCELLENT MEME to drop into a letter to the editor...)

3. Of course they are!
The phrase was an immediate focus of wide-spread derision.

Now, go ahead and name one objectively good thing these guys have done. One thing that has truly effected you positively in your day-to-day affairs. One thing that has bolstered your overall standard of living.

Cluestick moment: It's gonna be hard. Really hard.

4. He's FLIP FLOPPING again........
He's going to have to drop his "ownership (privitized) society" meme too. Argentina has an "ownership society" and it's NOT PRETTY.

5. this week their word is "Reform" - let's see Kerry stomp that one down!
bush wants reform - he can say the word real clearly, it's a good word - much easier than 'sovereignty' for sure.

The ad I've seen this week has him saying 'reform' way too many times as he crinkles his forehead in that "I'm a comPASSionate president" look. It's the ad saying it would be a good thing if folks owned their own healthcare.

18. And Bush using 'reform' is also hilarious!
What's he going to reform?

He, his supporters, and his party control EVERYTHING.

22. I don't know..
to me the phrase "own your own healthcare" doesn't sound too positive to me? I wonder how positive it sounds to other people. When I think of "owning my own healthcare" I envision myself needing surgery and having to perform surgery on myself because I "own" my heathcare. Wonder how this is playing.

8. This should be a sign to Kerry
that if he hammers Bush, Bush will look like a maroon. This is why we Dems, especially elected ones, need not be afraid of offending the poor rethugs. I'm ready to fight!

9. It Backfired on Herbert Hoover in 1932 too!
Only the Bush ignorami could possibly have missed the connection:

Prosperity is Just Around Which Corner?

Everywhere you go, everyone you meet,
All they talk about is this depression.
They blame it on the war, they blame it on Wall Street,
On politics and this administration.
For two years now we've been assured good times are on the way,
I wonder how much longer we must hear them talk this way?

Prosperity is just around the corner!
(What we'd like to know is which corner?
We've turned so many corners now we're dizzy.)
But still I'm positive we'll soon be busy!

Why I read in Monday's paper that 10,000 men were hired!
(Yes, but Tuesday they forgot to say 12,000 more were fired.)
Well, I insist that this land of ours is stable!
(Stable? sounds like horses to me!)

It will take awhile to reprogram the chimp, so I bet we'll hear the phrase occasionally when the chimp strays off message.

12. But has he dropped "Rich people don't pay taxes anyway." as
his justification for keeping tax rates low on high incomes? He has repeated that one several times, in spite of the obvious target it gives Kerry.

Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 08:37 AM by bushbash
how hopelessly out of touch this administration is with the realities we face on a day-to-day basis. They rely on media feedback to gauge whether they are on topic or not. Why not listen to what Joe American is telling you? We have been more than happy and willing to tell you your policies suck and are damaging our economy, credibility, stability and general well-being, you bunch of pandering asshats...

Hey ShrubCo, don't feed us crap and tell us it's caviar. It ain't working anymore.
