Bush stumps in New Mexico
Bush stumps in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE — President George W. Bush had special words of encouragement Wednesday to a woman wearing a “Marine Corps Mom” pin at his rally Wednesday.

“I just want you to know that your son is making an historic contribution to the peace and security of our country,” Bush said to the unidentified woman, who told him her son would soon deploy to Iraq. “There are a lot of people praying for him. He’s going to be just fine, by the way.”

“I know what I’m doing when it comes to winning this war,” Bush told the estimated 1,000 supporters who had filled an aircraft hanger at Eclipse Aviation. “And I’m not going to be sending mixed signals.”
Bush accused his Democratic rival, John Kerry, of telling a reporter that he would “substantially reduce the number of troops in Iraq six months after he’s president.”

“We all want the mission to be completed as soon as possible, but we want the mission to be complete,” Bush said. “The mission is not going to be completed as quickly as possibly if the enemy thinks we’re going to be removing a substantial number of troops in six months.”

Bush campaigns in Nevada
Nuclear dump issue factors in campaign
Thursday, August 12, 2004 Posted: 11:53 AM EDT (1553 GMT)

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Facing political fallout from an unpopular decision to put a nuclear waste dump in the state, President Bush is rallying Republican support in Nevada where he wants to repeat his victory of four years ago.

Bush was campaigning Thursday before a friendly labor union in Nevada and raising money in Santa Monica, California, for the Republican Party.

On the third day of a cross-country campaign swing, Bush's problems in Nevada stem from rival John Kerry tapping into voter anger over the president's designation of Yucca Mountain as the national repository for nuclear waste.

The issue has stirred up such strong feelings in Nevada that it is creating a close race between the president and Kerry, according to recent polls.

4. "... peace and security of OUR COUNTRY"???
What country is that, El Smirko? You can't be talking about the US since no military behavior in this country's history has been more clearly predatory and antagonistic to human rights worldwide.

5. What happened to "Mission Accomplished?"
“We all want the mission to be completed as soon as possible, but we want the mission to be complete,” Bush said.

NOW who's flip-flopping? It ain't Kerry, like you've inferred.

"And I’m not going to be sending mixed signals."

Sounds like that's what you just did.

7. This paper is part of a chain which includes our local paper here,
the Las Cruces Sun-News...part of the Gannett chain.........

The setup: a phone interview with Kerry, largely focused on BRAC (base closings) on Tuesday. Kerry wants to hold off and reassess base closings in light of events since 2001.

On Wednesday, a really awful editorial that read like a B/C campaign memo, crucifying Kerry, saracastically saying that he voted 3 times for BRAC (last time in 2001), so why CHANGE now?? Ignoring his reason, which he stated in their own story the day before. On the front page, a story about Bush visiting NM.

Today, a HUGE story on Bush up north in ABQ, with a second story about how Bush wants to continue BRAC.

Still waiting for the Democratic party reply. I knocked myself out yesterday researching all this, prepared to write a letter, and was told that the Dems would be responding.

This sort of setup should be followed closely and attended to immediately. Am concerned about the "structure" of the campaign down here...

11. Cruces is "Texas lite..." you have my condolences
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 07:15 PM by DesertedRose
VERY generally speaking, south of I-40 leans republican; north of I-40 leans democratic (except Los Alamos)...and ABQ is a free-for-all.

Las Cruces is too close to Texas. People from Carlsbad, Hobbs or anywhere in that area speak with a Texas dialect to me. And then there's the oil and ranching history....

Sorry to hear your frustration.
