ALBUQUERQUE — President George W. Bush had special words of encouragement Wednesday to a woman wearing a “Marine Corps Mom” pin at his rally Wednesday.
“I just want you to know that your son is making an historic contribution to the peace and security of our country,” Bush said to the unidentified woman, who told him her son would soon deploy to Iraq. “There are a lot of people praying for him. He’s going to be just fine, by the way.”

“I know what I’m doing when it comes to winning this war,” Bush told the estimated 1,000 supporters who had filled an aircraft hanger at Eclipse Aviation. “And I’m not going to be sending mixed signals.”
Bush accused his Democratic rival, John Kerry, of telling a reporter that he would “substantially reduce the number of troops in Iraq six months after he’s president.”
“We all want the mission to be completed as soon as possible, but we want the mission to be complete,” Bush said. “The mission is not going to be completed as quickly as possibly if the enemy thinks we’re going to be removing a substantial number of troops in six months.”

Nuclear dump issue factors in campaign

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Facing political fallout from an unpopular decision to put a nuclear waste dump in the state, President Bush is rallying Republican support in Nevada where he wants to repeat his victory of four years ago.
Bush was campaigning Thursday before a friendly labor union in Nevada and raising money in Santa Monica, California, for the Republican Party.
On the third day of a cross-country campaign swing, Bush's problems in Nevada stem from rival John Kerry tapping into voter anger over the president's designation of Yucca Mountain as the national repository for nuclear waste.
The issue has stirred up such strong feelings in Nevada that it is creating a close race between the president and Kerry, according to recent polls.
