"...spokesman Ahmad al-Shinabi told Reuters. Another spokesman confirmed the report."

They're al Sadr's spokesmen.

25. First they'll drop Sadr at Abu Ghraib where Rummy will
have a meeting or two, and then Colin Powell will bribe him, and if all goes well, Sadr will be opening his news paper office again. And his Iraqi army will be wearing American uniforms.

8. Lucky for you, you won't be one of our 130,000 brothers and sisters
who will deal with the reactionary counterattacks that will occur. You think we win if he dies? They'll be 100 Sadr's to take his place.

Another simple moron that's not smart enough to be posting on this board.

11. I have no love for Sadr
But I put freepers and wingnuts in the same category.

'Premodern' - check - 'fascist' - check - 'blood-thirsty' - check - sounds like a wingnut freeptard to me.

Fuck I hate freepers.

14. US forces reoccupy heart of Najaf
US marines backed by tanks and aircraft have seized the heart of the Iraqi city of Najaf in a major assault on Al-Mahdi Army fighters. Warplanes and helicopters pounded the lightly armed fighters of the Al-Mahdi Army stationed in a cemetery next to the Imam Ali Mosque. US forces stormed the home of Moqtada al-Sadr who was believed to be holed up in the mosque along with hundreds of his Al-Mahdi Army, witnesses said.

Hundreds of Iraqi civilians have been killed in the US bombing and fighting between al-Sadr's supporters and US forces and Iraqi security forces in seven Iraqi cities. Shaikh Ahmad al-Shaibani said the raid followed about one hour of intense fighting between US troops and the Al-Mahdi Army, although he had no account yet of the casualties.

<snip>

Some 2000 US servicemen and 1800 Iraq security men are deployed around Najaf, a city of 600,000 about 160km south of Baghdad. The US military said Iraqi forces were actively involved in the offensive, although witnesses said American troops were doing most of the fighting.

As news of the offensive filtered in, thousands of Iraqis took to the streets in Basra and a Baghdad district to protest. "Long live al-Sadr; America and Allawi are infidels," thousands of protesters in Basra chanted.

15. If he dies, our soldiers could be in even more danger.
I'm hoping he is okay. It's his country - not ours - and the Iraqis will unite against whoever kills or captures hiim.

16. SHAKY IRAQ GOVERNMENT PLAYING WITH FIRE IN NAJAF MISSION

SHAKY IRAQ GOVERNMENT PLAYING WITH FIRE IN NAJAF MISSION

BAGHDAD, Aug 12 (AFP) - Just six weeks after taking power from the US-led occupation, Iraq's shaky interim government is playing with fire by trying to expel militiamen from one of Islam's holiest cities, analysts said Thursday.

SNIP

But as thousands of US troops and Iraqi security forces tried to trap the militiamen in the heart of the city, home to the tomb of Prophet Mohammed's son-in-law Ali, they risked a violent religious and political backlash.

SNIP

"It would be very difficult to have a decisive victory in Najaf ... without causing extensive damage and the higher the cost in civilian casualties, the less the political gain," he added.

(SNIP)

Sadr's fighters have proved themselves less effective at inflicting losses among US troops than insurgents in Fallujah, who attracted sympathy and admiration for their standoff against the occupation forces.

The cleric has also provoked discontent among Najaf residents, furious that his militia have hunkered down in the city, driving away thousands of tourists and much-needed income.

20. And....
they have their own guns. I'm sure they've also accessed the piles of weaponry left unguarded during our initial invasion of Iraq. We had more important things to seize like oil fields.

23. Wounds not life threatening (AlJazeera)
Al-Sadr wounded in US bombing of Najaf

Friday 13 August 2004, 9:17 Makka Time, 6:17 GMT

Al-Sadr asks followers to act wisely

Iraqi Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr has been wounded in US bombardment of Najaf, but his injuries were not life threatening.

"Sayyed Moqtada was wounded in American bombing," his spokesman Ahmad al-Shinabi said.

Al-Sadr's assistant Aws al-Khafaji told Aljazeera the Shia leader suffered three injuries to his body.
The incident happened early on Friday as US-led occupation troops clashed with fighters loyal to al-Sadr near an ancient cemetery in the centre of Najaf.

Another spokesman said al-Sadr had wounds to his arm and chest and was being treated at the sacred Imam Ali mosque, where many of his al-Mahdi fighters have taken refuge....cont'd
