5. yep... I'm one of those under 'mandatory' evac
Had to move to a 'voluntary' evac zone, and sit where while all my stuff (potentially) gets destroyed.
Siesta Key hasn't had a serious hurricane in over 40 years (Dorothy in the 60's, from what the news says).

Hopefully just some flooding, and I come back to a apt in one piece. :scared:

7. We are in an evacuation zone
We live in Pinellas County and, as dumb as it may sound, right now I'm worried about my neighbor and her cat. She's a real cat lover and has had her cat for years. Last night she was trying to get him used to a leash when he became frightened and ran away, leash and all.

She's been up all night pacing the street. I wish I knew how to help her, but he's in deep hiding. Well, good luck to everyone.

10. Kitty knows how to stay safe
he's probably tucked in somewhere and won't move until the storm is over. The animals know what's coming; I'm in Orlando and haven't heard ANY singing birds or insects this morning. It's eerie!

I'm worried about some cats in Tampa, too. One of my favorite places is Big Cat Rescue of Tampa; they have over 250 wild cats (some very rare-including many tigers) that they provide a wonderful life for. Where can they take their animals, and how can they move over 200 of them? Some of them are very tame, but many of them live a "simulated" wild life (the have huge enclosures and enrichment programs) so I don't know what they'll do!

11. Tampa is going to be drowned.
I stayed at the Marriott downtown a couple of years ago and it was practically on the water. If a 13 foot storm surge comes in, they will be underwater for sure.

Good luck to all the people and cats in Charley's path! Get to higher ground please.

25. Oh, man. It's going to be a mess in Tampa. I stayed there in '91 and
We were watching a violent storm come west over Tampa Bay. After the storm, the roads coming off the causeway were under 2 feet of water in some spots. I feel bad for the damage people will have to suffer from this hurricane.

When is the last time a hurrican came in through Tampa? Seems like a weird path.

22. I imagine they would climb a tree.
And hold on real tight. It's a wonder you don't see dead animals lying everywhere after a hurricane, but I never have. Don't worry about those cats. They'll probably fare far better than most animals dealing with the weather.

14. Thanks for the info!
My sis is there and hopefully will get out on a plane this morning at 9:30 am EST.

To all of you who live there, please be safe and don't be wading through the water with all the downed powerlines. I know that's stupid, because if you live in a hurricane zone, you already know this! I hope Charley isn't too devastating. Take care all DUers in Charley's path!

19. Cheney is worse. Charley will be a memory much sooner
Charley will be a nasty mess for Florida, and the SE, but won't manage to totally screw most of the country, or destroy 10s of thousands of people, or ruin our national reputation.

-Not to discount the trauma of Charley for Floridians or anyone else in his path. You have all my sympathy and best wishes for your safety.

bands are about to hit but the storm itself is predicted to hit them at around 2pm. He lives about 10 minutes outside of Tampa. He said he was outside, sitting in lawn-chairs, watching the storm come in! I hope he was joking.

31. My Dad did that too.
He lives near the coast north of Wilmington NC. Late 1990's they got hit with about 3 huge hurricanes....Fran, Floyd and I can't remember the other one at this moment. The first one Dad sat outside watching while Mom called crying. Next one, he stayed in side. Third one...they evacuated inland to relatives.

Nuts!

27. OH PLEASE...
I was just watching CNN and all they do is show video of the ocean and the waves being made. Funny thing is while the anchors are talking about how horrible this storm is, there were 3 or 4 year old kids running around playing near the ocean with their parents. This is like Baghdad Bob saying that no American Troops are in Baghdad. It may be a category two hurricane, but Floridians have been through much worse. Once again though, WHY IS CNN RUNNING A 24 HOUR WEATHER CHANNEL WHEN WE ALREADY HAVE A 24 hour weather channel. I grew up in New Orleans and it is below sea level, yet we seem to get through most hurricanes just fine. I hope everyone is safe, but this hurricane is getting way to much NATIONAL COVERAGE. I bet the only reason anyone gets hurt is because they were doing something stupid like running around outside during the storm. It's a category two now and when it hits land and goes to wards Tampa it should be a category one. I'm no expert, but that's my guess. Anyways those people who didn't get out of Tampa when they had a chance, well I don't really feel sorry for them. Just stay inside and everyone should be OK.

28. It's one mile an hour below a Cat 3
and you know it's a Cat 3 by now. The eye is still building and it's gaining strength. Over 5 million people live in this area that will see a tidal surge. Tampa is on the water so it won't be a Cat 1 by the time it hits. I wish they were so lucky.

great map below to understand why this matters:

You would think that they could at least wait until the storm was over.. I bet the people who are shoving everything the value into trash bags and clothes baskets, have put politics behind them for now at least..

Let's help them all survive this...and THEN see how it pplays out..
