SANTA FE(AP)A prominent conservative New Mexico Republican is asking people who get his e-mail newsletter to sign petitions to put independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader on the state’s November ballot.
Nader’s campaign has to gather 14,527 valid signatures by Sept. 7 to win a spot on the ballot.
Sen. Rod Adair, R-Roswell, on Thursday asked the nearly 24,000 recipients of his newsletter to sign the petitions. ..
Adair acknowledged Thursday that Nader’s presence is expected to help President Bush in the election by drawing potential Kerry voters.
But he said parties such as the Libertarians help Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry by attracting Republicans. Libertarian presidential candidate Michael Badnarik is on the New Mexico ballot.
“If the Republicans were trying to keep the Libertarians off the ballot, we’d get fried,” he said.
