Ad that won Web award criticizes Bush for war (to air in NY)
SF Chronicle

A Marine Corps and Iraq war veteran assails the premise of the war in a political commercial chosen in a Web contest by the liberal Internet- based advocacy group MoveOn.org and scheduled to air in New York during the Republican National Convention, which begins Aug. 30.

The ad is a statement by Lee Buttrill, 30, a former Marine Corps sergeant who said he voted for President Bush in 2000. He was one of 40 Americans interviewed and filmed by Errol Morris, the documentary filmmaker who won an Academy Award for the 2003 film "The Fog of War," all of whom lambaste the president in interviews that may be packaged as political advertising.

More than 100,000 MoveOn.org members cast votes for 17 finalists in the "Real People'' ad campaign, and while there was a close grouping of four after the voting, Buttrill and his message had the most votes, the advocacy group said Thursday.

Buttrill, of Denver, who said he worked in a Marine intelligence unit as an Arabic linguist in Iraq, says in the political advertisement, "We were given these ideas that there were weapons of mass destruction. ... It was just a lie. That wasn't a proper use of American troops. It wasn't a proper use of my life, or my friends' lives, or the Marines who I've seen die around me." ...

1. All 17 were good.
and if you watch them, one after another, they make an impact far greater than one alone. I think this is because there are folks from different professions, different races. They are all very sincere in their love of country and their distaste of Bush. The winning ad was a good one-my only objection to it was the sergeant did not say on camera that he had voted Republican last time.

For those who haven't seen these ads, go to moveon.org

2. Agree...all 17 were good
I kinda feel sorry for Buttrill.

The Swiftboats will probably do an ad about him next....or FR will hunt him down like a mad dog.

Courageous guy.

5. why bother to air it in NY? NYC is already heavily Dem and the
repubs who will be at the convention are the RW choir. They will not be swayed IMO

7. Gosh, I wish we had some media here in the 2nd Congr. of NM...
we are the ONLY area in the state not in the ABQ market....We are in the El Paso market and it's a lot more expensive....

We see no ads unless we watch the news out of ABQ on the ABC affiliate that shows up around dinner time and around 10...when they take off the home shopping crap. I hardly ever see it...it's like it's coming in from a foreign land.......

8. It will get more media attention in New York
They can run it one time, and various news outlets headquartered in New York will repeat it for free.
