Cannabis extract shrinks brain tumours

05:00 15 August 04
NewScientist.com news service

Cannabis extracts may shrink brain tumours and other cancers by blocking the growth of the blood vessels which feed them, suggests a new study.

An active component of the street drug has previously been shown to improve brain tumours in rats. But now Manuel Guzmán at Complutense University, Spain, and colleagues have demonstrated how the cannabis extracts block a key chemical needed for tumours to sprout blood vessels – a process called angiogenesis.

And for the first time, the team has shown the cannabinoids impede this chemical in people with the most aggressive form of brain cancer - glioblastoma multiforme.

1. Watch for the swarm of pharmaceutical parasites
to be all over this one - but only with THEIR particular DNA of cannabis....maybe they'll kill each other off in the fray!

Naw....they work too well together as a monopoly....

2. Glad to see research is continuing

Despite all of the negative things you read about cannabis as a medicine, I know it is a powerful one.

My option has been to go on chemotherapy/interferon drugs - an idea that does not appeal to me on any level given my illness.

I believe it helps to stabilize some illnesses.

I wish the government would wake up and realize that cannabis extract and other forms of marijuana are very good and effective drugs for a variety of illnesses; in fact they can be semi-curative in some cases such as the cancer mentioned in this article.

In my case, it is suspected that it slows or possibly halts the progression of my illness. I just wish it was legalized so it could be readily obtained for use.

I don't care to end up on Ashcrank's list so what a dilemma I find myself in. It is not readily available and I am in no condition to go out looking around for it and getting it from an unknown source. Sad isn't it?

4. this is huge if it gives even a few months to GBM
prognosis. being told you have a primary brain tumor is tough, being told it's a GBM and you have 6 mos to a year is a real drag. if pot can help that's a double winner.

5. Cannabis hope for brain cancer
MURDO MacLEOD

CANNABIS is set to be used in the battle against deadly brain cancers that affect around 4,000 people in the UK each year, it has emerged.

Scientists have shown that cannabinoids - the active ingredients responsible for the drug’s ‘high’ - hold back the growth of blood vessels which feed tumours.

Tumours of the brain and the central nervous system kill about 340 Scots each year, and many more undergo extensive surgery in a bid to save their lives.

7. This election is a crossroad on this and many other similar issues...
such as Kerry's stem-cell position and Bush*'s WAR ON STEROIDS. The whole idea of the balance between

-how government controls drug usage
-how drug laws are enforced
-which drugs fall into what category
-major drug companies in Anti-Trust violation

must be dealt with in the near term. Do you know why?

60% of our prisons, which represents the highest per capita prison population in the world, are people busted on drug crimes.

If you are a male with African descent, by the time you are 25, you have a 1 in 3 chance that you'll have been in prison.

The baby-boomers are aging and they want to live longer. So, they want stem-cell research to prevent Alzheimers. They want to re-grow tissues to fix Christopher Reeves. And, what is standing in the way?

Bush*

A vote for Kerry is a vote for America's Future.

10. There are a lot of naturally occuring plants than can kill people...
I agree that Cannibus should be legalized, the non-THC stuff industry, and the stuff with THC for people that get a prescription from a doctor.

13. I wonder if there's any correlation
between the outlawing of cannabis and the reported rise in cancers.

Interestingly enough, when looking for the tax act year that happened in the U.S., (1937) I found a site that claims the Inquisition outlawed cannabis ingestion in Spain during the 12th century.
Cannabis Medicines Forbidden

While embracing wine as a sacrament, and tolerating beer and hard liquor, the Inquisition outlawed cannabis ingestion in Spain in the 12th Century, and France in the 13th.

Many other natural remedies were simultaneously banned. Anyone using hemp to communicate, heal, etc. was labeled witch.

Saint Joan of Arc, for example, was accused in 1430-31 of using a variety of herbal witch drugs, including cannabis, to hear voices.

Interestingly, Mohammed reportedly used marijuana while outlawing alcohol.
