N.C. Candidate: Pakistani a 'Terrorist'

Sunday August 15, 2004 7:31 AM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A Pakistani man charged with immigration violations after filming Charlotte skyscrapers is described as a ``terrorist'' who came to the country ``to kill you'' in a new television ad from a North Carolina congressional candidate. Vernon Robinson began airing the ad days before his runoff election Tuesday in a Republican primary against state Sen. Virginia Foxx.

Kamran Akhtar, arrested July 20, has been in custody ever since on immigration charges and on charges he made false statements to officers.

Authorities say he also videotaped buildings in Dallas, Houston and Las Vegas, and an investigation into whether he has ties to terrorism is ongoing. His family has said Akhtar is a video buff.

Akhtar's attorney, George Miller, called the political ad ``grossly unfair.''

1. Here's another racist ad in Mr. Robinson's neighborhood
The Goopers are using this guy to say the things that white conservatives cannot get away with saying. "But, but, he's black", they'll say. Sorry, no dice.

2. Also
This comment shows he is a fascist:

I for one am sick of these Hollywood elitists. I think the Motion Picture Association of America should add a new movie rating to go along with the G, PG, PG-13, and R. A new rating of T for "Treason" would mean that all of the actors in this movie have given aid and comfort to the enemy in wartime and have interfered with the military operations of the United States.

7. Republican Manipulation of Language
Note the buzz phrases: Hollywood elitists, treason, aid to the enemy in the wartime. This wartime where blue-collar workers are back-drafted and fat cats make no sacrifices. By mentioning the ratings, the memes of the "moral decline of liberal culture" are woven into the piece. The word treason does double work, because it reminds us of our fears and it makes the speaker appear more patriotic.

Anyone who can think between the lines is either disgusted by this manipulation or cynically "chalks one up for our side" (their side).

Choose Democratic spokesperson and candidate phrases every bit as carefully, but more positively and optimistically.

5. Interfering with Justice to Convict a Person before a Trial; Defamation
This ad sounds like more than "grossly unfair". It seems criminal. It would seem that at the least there is libel or slander or defamation of character. Beyond that, isn't it against the law to refer to an accused as if they have been convicted? Isn't it covered by statutes that counter interfering with the course of justice?

Can't a good lawyer get the Republican on charges or civil damages?

6. I think so
The guy is a private citizen and cannot be slandered by a politician looking to score political points. The stations that air it can also be held responsible.

11. My 15yo son called me in to watch
the ad last night. We were both pissed about the ad. Robinson has tried and convicted the guy and he's yet to go to trial. He was arrested in late July, but Robinson has convicted him already. Unfortunately he will probably beat Foxx, the other Rep running, and our Dem candidate. We're surrounded by idiots and this one is right there at the top of the list....

12. certainly NC has
produced some of the worst "leaders" ever (Jesse Helms, Charles Taylor etc.)
And this guy may likely win.
It would be great if this ad lands him in court, but I doubt it.

14. all the ads are amazing - he will win?
He really will win? its staggering to listen to the ads. One ad says that President Bush hired him. If he wins the runoff today Kerry/Edwards should use his ads to show some some of Bush's people and how they view the world.

15. Robinson says suspect is fair game-newspaper

http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ/MGArticle/WSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031777347911&path=&s=

He has not been charged with terrorism-related activities. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office said that Akhtar is still under investigation.

In the ad, Robinson says that Akhtar "came here to kill you,'' and only he would shut down the Mexican border.

Robinson said at yesterday's press conference that Akhtar could be one of three things: a tourist, an architecture student or a terrorist. "I think it's fair game," to call Akhtar a terrorist, he said. Asked if his ad violates Akhtar's right to a fair trial, Robinson said he would let the voters decide.
