Three Venezuelan Ministers Say Chavez Wins Vote
CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters)

Three Venezuelan government ministers, who did not want to be identified, said on Monday that President Hugo Chavez had easily survived a referendum on whether to recall him.

25. Yup. Must keep the vote open until the desired result is in.
It's the "right" thing to do.

5. Wonderful news. You'd hate to see the cheating, vicious opposition win.
I hope we get the formal announcement he has won BIG TIME, and that he will live in complete safety for a very, very long time, without being assassinated, or kidnapped again, as he's been already.

It's really time the opposition started recognizing there are people in Venezuela BESIDES themselves.

6. Does anyone think this will be a mirror of Sept 11, 1973?
I fear that what happened on Sept 11 will happen again. Thousands killed in Chile after a presidential election in which the United States didn't agree with the outcome. (Note, almost a thousand more Chilean citizens were killed on that 9/11 directly by the government, than the number of our people on our own)

I fear what may happen to the good citizens of Venezuela. Brothers ands Sisters down in S. American, our thoughts are with you tonight.

Please don't let this be a repeat of Allende vs Pinochet, 1973. Sad, horrific times that should never be repeated.

11. Yes, Close it now, before more lives are ruined.
I wish I could join you and the rest of your brothers and sisters, but I must stay with my job and attempt to force change from a distance for now. Some day they will close all the Colonial Colleges, perhaps someday I will be able to march in solidarity with those who seek peace.

15. Or Plan Colombia?
Why do we ask questions for which we already know what the answer is? Kerry's support for the Venezuelan oligarchs would have been hint enough that he will support the School of Assassins at Fort Benning, just like Clinton did.

20. That's the problem, Indiana
Many people actually think Clinton gave us eight years of "peace and prosperity"--a platitude probably fomented by the likes of Carville and Begala. Just try to tell them about Clinton's bloody campaigns in Latin America, Yugoslavia and Iraq, and you'll be met with accusations of "troll" or "freeper."

Bush may indeed be our Caligula, but Clinton deftly filled the shoes of the former's predecessor, Tiberius.

28. More like Caesar Augustus in terms of governance
The point is that for those that believe in the Republic, an emperor and an empire is bad no matter who wears the crown.

33. Well, I did find this, which was promising.
From SoA Watch - it appears Kerry cosponsored S873, a bill to close the SoA. This was back in '99.

18. When I met John Kerry ...
I asked him if we could close the SOA, and he replied that it was worth looking into. I let it go at that , but I will press him on it the next time i see him. I think he can be persuaded to do the right thing. My personal feeling was that he is a good man, that actually means what he says.

32. If he means what he says, we're in trouble.
Considering he means to stay in Iraq until "the peace is won" (Viet Nam, anyone?), condemns Chavez as some sort of dictator, and wants the sanctions on Cuba to stay in place - just a few examples.

So he either means these things, which are very bad and very much in keeping with the status quo of American imperialism, or he doesn't mean them and is not being honest in order to win votes.

I'll hope for the latter, but it sure is a weird thing to hope for!

10. Both Sides See Venezuelan Referendum Victory
CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters)

.. Shortly earlier, senior opposition leaders had dropped heavy hints of victory.

Venezuelan law prohibits anyone from announcing electoral results until the country's election authorities do so.

"From the expression on my face, people can tell what's happening," said a smug-looking Enrique Mendoza, a leader of the opposition coalition which forced Sunday's referendum on the populist president.

Another opposition leader, former state oil company executive Juan Fernandez, said: "We're going to have fireworks and music .... we're going to say Venezuela woke up on the day of the referendum."

12. Jimmy Carter arrives at 1 AM to witness the counting of ballots
Picture from Venezuelan press:

César Gaviria, Valter Pecly Moreira y Jimmy Carter
llegaron poco antes de la 1:00 de la madrugada
a la sede del Poder Electoral para participar
en el proceso de conteo de votos.

The caption says that Jimmy Carter and two other dudes arrive to participate in the vote counting process. Another story says that the "opposition" demands observers be present at the count.

The story ends by saying that observers left at 2 AM without making a statement.

I hear now that the CNE is getting ready to announce the No won by 5% 52.5% to 47.5%, very confusing.

17. Opposition blogger
But now there's this piece, the latest:

"The CNE says the No won 58% to 41% with 94% of the results in. If OAS and Carter says this is true, then that's it we lost. But I think this will drag on. Supposedly nither Smartmatic, nor carter nor OAS back the results so far. This is the worst possible scenario in terms of peace for Venezuela.. "

Viva Chavez!

People don't think about Carter's connections to The Carlyle Group and the man that engineered the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, Frank Carlucci.

21. I fear this won't have a happy ending
I pray for Chavez and his impoverished allies in Venezuela, but my knowledge of five decades of U.S. foreign policy fills me with dread. Read William Blum's "Killing Hope," and you would find it nearly unfathomable for a leftist government in Latin America to succeed in lieu of our presence.

26. Bush Co is currently busy with more pressing matters.
If Bush is elected in November, Chavez will soon be one of the next prime targets. What ever it takes to get him out of office, Bush Co will do even if that includes overt military action.

29. I expect the false charge of Al-Qaeda living in an island off Venezuela...
to resurface again. We might have to search for the British press story that debunked that one (there were Venezuelan-Arabs that owned businesses on a resort island).

John Bolton was the source for the lie, the same Bolton that said Cuba was working on biological weapons.

24. Viva democracia! Viva la dama libertad! Viva la gente! Fuck the SOA!
Hopefully, the people of the US will defeat the right wing totalitarianist Bu$h administration, and Democracy and common sense will once again rule the western hemisphere.

Hey, big oil corporations, you got your ass kicked by a democracy!

And the people of the US are gonna put you in your place come November. Get used to it. Your time of corruptive power in government is over. We're gonna kick your little cabin boy, George W. Bu$h, into obscurity, or hopefully to prison, where your dishonest, corrupt little punk belongs, and you will be the servant of democracy, rather than the ruler.

Felicitaciones a Presidente Chavez, y la gente de Venezuela tambien!

Libertad! Democracia! Libertad! Viva Democracia y libertad!
