Blair plan to host Allawi angers party opponents
The poodle catching hell for inviting our new Saddam to the party conference. How will Labour welcome the Butcher of Najaf?

Blair plan to host Allawi angers party opponents
By Colin Brown, Deputy Political Editor
16 August 2004

Tony Blair was facing a backlash over his "autocratic" leadership last night after senior party figures confirmed that he plans to bring Iyad Allawi, Iraq's interim prime minister, to next month's Labour Party annual conference.

Mr Blair was expected to try to side-step a row over Iraq at the conference, which will be the launch-pad for Labour's general election campaign. However, Mr Blair has decided to face the critics in his party head on by putting Mr Allawi centre stage.

That prospect provoked a furious outburst from party activists, who accused him of refusing to learn the lessons from the war on Iraq. It also raised fresh questions about his intention to fight the election.

"It is such a calculated insult to the party that I wonder whether he wants to quit before the election," said Alice Mahon, Labour MP for Halifax and a leading critic of the war on Iraq.

1. What is Allawi doing leaving Iraq now?
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 02:19 AM by Nambe
It's like dimson going on vacation during the threat crisis. No excuse for this. Blair should tell Allawi to stay home and endure the crisis, however long that may be.

2. Allawi is IMPOTENT
He has no army, his supporters are all 50+, and gave up their weapons. He is, in the grand scheme of things, IMPOTENT.

The power vacuum has been overrun by the young, and restless (and PISSED).

Good for them.

I would do the same if my country was overrun by crusaders.
Don't give a shit what their agenda is.......

4. I hope that the story of Allawi executing prisoners gets lots of play
The poodle may wish he had never come up with this brainstorm if it causes a re-examination of Allawi. If Allawi leaves Iraq, maybe Chalabi will bring murder and money laundering charges against him.

5. Unfortunately the American press buried the story
it would demoralize the American public to find out that Allawi is merely a younger and English-speaking version of Saddam, without the mustache of course.

6. If poodle lets Allawi out of Iraq,
how's he gonna make him go back?
Allawi is a dead man in Iraq, and he knows it! The MAJORITY of Iraqis are already planning a Mussolini Necktie Party for Allawi. They've already picked out the lamp post.
