Carter and international observers at the CNE to confirm Chavez victory
A meeting has been taking place between directors of the National Elections Council (CNE and the Carter Center with the participation of Organization of American States (OAS) and international observers.

With the notable exception of OAS Secretary General, former Colombian president Cesar Gaviria, the observer corps has expressed satisfaction with the recall referendum results despite a procedural objections lodged by two opposition CNE directors emphasizing that although +94% of the votes have already been counted, the official statement of results is only preliminary at this stage.

OAS Secretary General Cesar Gaviria is very obviously upset by Chavez Frias' overwhelming victory but former US president Jimmy Carter has already said that for his part he's satisfied that the preliminary result has been issued "in complete conformity with established rules" ... in fact Carter has chided Gaviria for not taking aboard the results which everyone else is accepting as unimpeachable and an example of the participation and democratic maturity of the Venezuelan people.

No one is denying that the preliminary percentages in favor of President Hugo Chavez Frias could indeed vary as the remaining 5% of votes come in, but it is seen as highly unlikely that they will pose any significant threat to Chavez Frias' declared victory in Sunday's poll.

1. I guess this is where it helps Chavez that Carter hasn't always seemed...
...very sympathetic of the government's side. Despite that, he still says vote is good.

2. Guess this is NOT over yet
Coordinadora Democratica (CD) claims electoral fraud; refuses to accept results

Ramos Allup says that "the Coordinadora Democratica wants to express wants to express its absolute support of Sobella Mejias and Ezequiel Zamora ... our numbers, as held by our technical teams directed by Sumate, are completely different from those announced by the government-supporting CNE directors."

"According to our information there were 8.5 million voters for "SI" (Yes) represaenting 59.4% of the electorate against 40.6% for the NO option ... we must first check the figures ... the announced results are not admissible, and the numbers quoted by the three government CNE directors are disgracefully spurious."

4. Standard RW response-tactic:

They knew they'd have to lie, so they went with a BIG lie. "We didn't just win! We won in a landslide!".

And so it goes.

5. Only to be expected, especially since they screwed up with the radio
announcement early in the voting saying that Chavez lost.

8. Yeah, via exit polls taken only from wealthy neighborhoods.
It's quite pitiful, really.

The coup plotters will now regroup and try another tactic. Al-Qaeda?

10. Alright, so that should END the bullshit coming from the Bush
administration regarding this once and for all, right? He's been elected TWICE now, in legitimate elections with OBSERVERS, including a FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

The guy is their leader. No one can deny that.
