Kerry tops Bush by 18 points in New York, college poll finds

Democratic challenger John Kerry tops President George W. Bush 53 – 35 percent among New York State voters, with four percent for independent candidate Ralph Nader, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. With Nader out of the race, Sen. Kerry is ahead 55 – 35 percent.

New York voters disapprove of the job President Bush is doing 59 – 37 percent, little changed from a 58 – 36 percent disapproval June 16, the worst score ever measured in any statewide or national poll by the independent Quinnipiac University.

Going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do, New York State voters say 57 – 39 percent.

1. Why would the Republicans have their convention in New York?
Hillary and Schumer are looking great in those additional numbers too. :)

3. Well they're not there to politicize 9/11 - they would never do a thing...

6. If the protests are not peaceful, it can only be bad for Dems.....
Imagine news footage of rabid anti-Bush protestors smashing shit playing on television screens from Ohio to Florida.

Norman Mailer is convinced it's a trap. I tend to agree.

While I feel politicizing 9/11 was their primary reason, bad press and backlash to protests is their Trojan Horse.

5. CT and MA, are also Democratic
states and also have Republican Governors. Republicans get elected because the ones that run in these states are Moderates. Pataki is pro choice, for example. So usually there is not a huge difference as far as social policy goes and people just vote for the one they think will do the better job. Since they are not concerned about abortion rights, privacy, etc. being threatened, they can vote for a Republican. Also, in NY State, the city is very Democratic but go to areas like Buffalo, Syracuse, etc. and you will find more Moderates in those areas.

20. Well, Buffalo's more liberal than either Syracuse or Rochester.
At least they were before the neocon-metastasis in the 70's. The southern tier and upstate (e.g. Watertown) both crawl with the 'living brain-dead' though. There're some pretty anachronistic conservatives 'round those parts, too.

8. Bush is running ads in California. Will he campign in New York?
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 10:02 AM by Jack Rabbit
Bring it on! He's wasting time and money here; Kerry has a 10-12% lead in the polls and few people are going to change their minds in the next eleven weeks.

So will he waste time and money in New York, where he'e even further behind?

11. Ms. O'Grady is entitled to her opinion
However, referring to Springsteen as a "song and dance" act really shows her ignorance. The Boss is not Fred Astaire.

13. Ahh - ano ther "slight" lead, I see.
But bunkerboy, with his LOSING the popular vote, and with his 1% or 2% phoney leads is still and overwhelmingly "popular war time president".

Go figure.

16. Interesting. Bush hasn't lost support in NY since 2000
where he got 35% of the total to Gore's 60%. I respect Quinnipiac very much and wonder what this would mean if projected nationally.
I suspect it will be very close yet again.

17. This just means that
the Repug base is about 35%. The base would vote for him if he set puppies on fire in the town square.
