NJ Gov's)Lover's last-ditch deal to keep mum ($2 m bargain)

Jim McGreevey's former gay lover made a desperate cash-for-silence demand just minutes before the New Jersey governor told the world he was homosexual, sources said yesterday.

Less than a half hour before McGreevey's stunning announcement that he had cheated on his wife with a man and would step down in November, Golan Cipel asked the governor's lawyers for $2 million - down from a previous request for $5 million, the administration sources said.

Cipel also wanted the administration to okay a proposed Touro College medical school in New Jersey, they said. In exchange, the Israeli national said he would not file a sex-harassment suit against McGreevey, the sources said.

The demands were relayed from Cipel's lawyer to McGreevey's legal team at the governor's mansion about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, sources said. The legal team then called the statehouse, where McGreevey and his advisers were preparing for his announcement.

"It was the first anyone had heard of Touro" as part of an alleged shakedown, said one source, who asked not to be identified. McGreevey's lawyers rejected the bid.

1. Tape. I wanna hear the tape.
I do hope they taped it, seems like an obvious thing to do
in this sort of situation.

3. In some states
taping something with out informing the other party is illegal.

5. True, but I'll bet it would be worth it if they were blackmailing you.
We have lots of laws, most are enforced very selectively.

9. Yes
But I think if a member of the executive branch obtains evidence illegally the evidence can not be used against you. (i.e. the cops bust in to your house with out a warrant or cause and find documents indicating you stole something. They can not use it as evidence against you as it was obtained illegally)

If the law works the same way in NJ (which I'd imagine it does) a government official taping illegally may have actually let the guy off the hook.

11. It would be the easiest thing in the world for the Governor
of New Jersey to get a warrant for a wire tap. Hello?

12. Did he know prior
that he would be getting the phone call? If not, I don't see how he would know to do it.

This guy also had connections. Don't you think if the governor got a warrant this guy would find out about it?

14. Its clear:
1.) The negotiations had been going on for some time,
started at $50 mill, worked down to $2 mill. This last was
just before he went public. Sure the Gov. has time to get
a warrant. Did he? I don't know. I'm not sure in his case
I would bother. Did whatshername get a warrant to tape Monica
Lewinsky? Did it cost her anything? That was Virginia, where
the Repukes got in political trouble for the same thing taping
the Dems. Did they get a warrant? Heck no.

2.) The Gov. WAS this guys connections, governmentwise. True
he was in with the RealEstate moneybags too, but there is no
way he finds a sealed warrant when the Gov. doesn't want him to.
He is already a private citizen again, hence the blackmail

Columnist Says McGreevey Sex Scandal was Israeli Intelligence Operation

Just what this whole business needed--ANOTHER monkey wrench! But surely Cipel realizes he didn't have a case: how could he have explained in staying in contact with McGreevey 18 months after he left the NJ security post, and accepting his help with getting him other jobs?

One has to wonder, why the heck does Isreal want to penetrate NJ homeland security? I know that some of the financial institutions moverd their disaster recovery operations to NJ when 9-ll occured. I don't know if those institutions are still operating at those locations but this leaves me wondering if NJ is the nex target for the "terrorists".

This is how Moussad works. Thats why our country is going to hell in a hand basket. Too many politicians are being manipulated by the Israelis. If I recall correctly Moussads motto goes something like "the end justifies the means".

I read a very interesting book called a couple of years ago "The Profits of War" "Inside the Secret U.S.-Israeli arms Network" by Ari Ben-Menashe a former Israeli operative and secrect arms dealer during the 80's. The US Government arrested him and charged with illegally selling three c-130 transport planes to Iran. He was aquitted and wrote the book after he was hung out to dry his country.

I don't think for one minute that the bush* admins top priority for goign to war in Iraq was oil.

7. Makes me wonder how many other Dem office holders are being
blackmailed right now. Also saddened at the thought of how many potentially great public servants are not going into public service because of this sort of s**t.

Shades of J. Edgar Hoover are very visible around the nation.
