Speed Up Saddam's Trial, Allawi Tells Court
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi urged an Iraqi court Monday to speed up proceedings against toppled leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and his close aides.

Allawi said his U.S.-backed government would do all it can to ensure the men get a fair trial.

"His Excellency impressed upon the judges the importance of speeding the trials of the leaders of the previous regime," Allawi's spokesman said in a statement.

1. Good news is hard to come by.
This dog and pony show should be an excellent distraction,
with plenty of opportunities for the new "government", and I use
the term loosely, to display itself to best advantage.

2. All they care about is keeping it secret.
That means it needs to be done before an actual govt could actually be elected. If their new constitution eventually gives him a right to a public jury trial, it would be a huge embarassment for Bushco. He'd have a public forum to address all the behind the scenes crap Bushco colluded with him on.

Same reason Manuel Noreiga never got a public trial.

3. There's your October Surprise: Saddam's trial 24/7..atrocity film at 11:00
Bush doesn't want to run against Kerry...he'd much rather run against Saddam, Uday, mass graves and rape rooms.

That's why he spent last week trying to bait Kerry into saying that he (Kerry) would not have gone to war.

5. I don't see how they can speed it up
The court that will try Hussein hasn't been been formed yet. Salem Chalabi's little 'court' was merely where he was arraigned.

The actual trial is supposed to be held by a court created by the new Iraqi government after the 'January elections'. There's no way they can speed this up without speeding up the elections -- and that's not going to happen the way things are going right now.

If they manage to come up with some sort of kangaroo court for Hussein before Nov. 2nd, Saddam will have a good case that the court itself is invalid.

7. Why speed up the inevitable?
Saddam Hussein has cancer is my understanding. Why don't they just hold him where he is? He is likely going to die anyway soon enough.

More fraud and more waste - never stops!

:wtf:

8. What about Chalabis' trials?
There could be quite a lineup at the gallows before a new Iraqi dictator settles in.
