Marijuana Ingredient Inhibits Pathway For Brain Tumor Blood Vessels
Marijuana Ingredient Inhibits VEGF Pathway Required For Brain Tumor Blood Vessels

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/08/040816085401.htm

Cannabinoids, the active ingredients in marijuana, restrict the sprouting of blood vessels to brain tumors by inhibiting the expression of genes needed for the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).

According to a new study published in the August 15, 2004 issue of the journal Cancer Research, administration of cannabinoids significantly lowered VEGF activity in laboratory mice and two patients with late-stage glioblastoma.

"Blockade of the VEGF pathway constitutes one of the most promising antitumoral approaches currently available," said Manuel Guzmán, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, with the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain, and the study's principal investigator.

"The present findings provide a novel pharmacological target for cannabinoid-based therapies."

Exciting stuff on so many levels!

3. But somehow, some way, Asscroft will come up with an excuse why
brain tumor patients should be denied marijuana treatments to extend their lives.

My little sister died of a brain tumor at 22. She was an absolutely beautiful girl, and she suffered so, especially at the end. If pot can inhibit tumor growth, then it better become legal more medicinal purposes pronto.

5. I doubt that smoking it will be the method of transmission for Tx.
So he won't be able to make it a "cause."

10. this is where this thread should be at
If it could have helped your sister, we need to know!

I just lost a relative (fairly young too) to cancer and believe me, this person, Ms. Never Did Anything (smoke, drink, etc.) might have tried this IF it were an option given to her.

Instead it was months of chemotherapy which led to death. Horrible way to go. :(

4. C'mon now,
you know there is no medical use for marijuana, it's all just a ploy for decriminalizatio/legalization. Those poor brain tumor-afflicted fuckers can take marinol. ;)

6. people need to read this and be serious about it!
It angers me on threads like this (I'll volunteer, etc.). This is BIG news!

It may have an profound effect on other diseases of the brain possibly. If it appears to halt the growth of cancer cells in the brain, it may halt the growth of other types of cells that are making people so sick.

If anyone out there that has ever lost someone to cancer or other serious brain disease (i.e. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, MS, etc.) maybe you can relate to why I read this the same way I read stories about possible treatments for these horrifying diseases.

7. I had a friend die of brain cancer
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 07:03 PM by tridim
and I practically begged her to smoke pot the whole time. She always said, "No thanks, it'll ruin my brain". :(

Gawd I hate the government. She could very possibly be alive today if she wasn't a victim of their BS anti-marijuana propaganda.
