Reuters - New explosion rocks Baghdad, casualties reported
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An explosion rocked a commercial street in central Baghdad on Tuesday, causing some casualties, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear if the blast at Rasheed Street was caused by a car bomb or a mortar bomb.

An Interior Ministry spokesman confirmed the explosion but did not have any further details.

The blast came as a national conference, held in central Baghdad's Green Zone, was due to elect a 100-member assembly to oversee elections.

<snip>
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A shell killed seven people in a busy Baghdad street on Tuesday and U.S. forces fought pitched battles with Shi'ite militia in the holy city of Najaf.

The new violence highlighted the massive security challenge facing interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, as prominent Iraqis delayed a peace mission to try to end the Najaf uprising which has killed hundreds and rattled oil markets.

The attack in Baghdad's bustling Rasheed street destroyed at least five cars and left pools of blood on the sidewalks. Two children were among the dead and 42 people were wounded. Some officials said the blast was caused by a roadside bomb.

It followed a mortar attack near the fortified Green Zone compound where the political and religious leaders were meeting to select a 100-member interim national assembly. Officials said it was unclear if there were any casualties from that attack.

<snip>
At least seven people have been killed and 42 wounded in one of three explosions that have rocked central Baghdad, Iraqi police and hospital officials say.

The dead included two children, hospital officials said.

At least five cars were destroyed in the blast on Rashid street, a busy commercial part of the city centre.

The Iraqi government said the blast was caused by a falling shell, not a car bomb as they had previously stated.
