LAT: GOP Struggle for (Convention) Podium (cons. Christians slighted)
STYLE & CULTURE
A GOP struggle for the podium
Conservative Christians feel slighted by party's moderate picks for prime convention slots.

By Anne-Marie O'Connor, Times Staff Writer

With days to go before the Republican National Convention, the culture wars are heating up again. This time they're starting at home, as the Republican Party's election-year overtures to moderates clash with its affirmations to conservative Christian voters.

Many socially conservative leaders feel slighted, saying their representatives have been edged out of prime-time convention speaking slots by more moderate Republicans, such as California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani — who favor legal abortion — and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who opposes a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage....

***

Indiana Rep. Mike Pence got 127 Republicans in Congress to sign a letter calling for a central speaking role for Rep. Henry J. Hyde (R-Ill.), who is anti-abortion, saying his appearance would electrify the delegates like "Elvis at Memphis."...

***

Emphasizing conservative values at the convention (Janice Crouse, a leader of Concerned Women for America said) would help Bush distinguish his party from the Democrats, who she felt blurred the party distinctions in Boston by highlighting Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John F. Kerry's decorated military service in Vietnam and focusing on faith and family.

"The Democrats tried to have it both ways too," she said. "I was amazed at some of the things they said. They stressed family values. They stressed faith. I laughed when a commentator said they stole Republican values. They really did."...

1. Henry Hyde? Wasn't he the subject of a Larry Flynt expose during
the illegal, unconstitional impeachment of our last elected president?

copywrite laws regarding "original thoughts" too. It's obvious the Republicans have more original thoughts than the Dems, thus we had to steel them from the Repubs. (sarcasm)LOL

3. Another GOP convention, another smoke and mirrors show
Step right up, pay the fee and see the greatest show on the earth! Yes my friend you are going to be entertained by the wolf in sheep clothes.Put on your magic shoes, click your heals together three times and repeat, there is no place like home, no place like home, no place like home. Remember, if you believe hard enough your dreams may come true.

5. Perfect example of why we must utterly defeat them
Any group that claims to have a monopoly on faith and family is a danger to the very foundation of democracy.

... govern from the right.

The same deception Bush* pulled in 2000. It's not really a surprise to Dems, why is the right wing surprised? They will never win an election if they trot out those wingnuts - at least Bush* is smart enough to know that :)

9. I really hope Pence gets his way
I want the American public to truly understand what is meant by conservative values and the conservative agenda. I want women to know that Republican candidates like Alan Keyes would take away their right to choose, even if they become pregnant because of rape or incest. I want homosexuals to know just what Republicans think of them (I've read that some conservative preachers still think homosexuality is a 'lifestyle choice' and that you can 'un-gay' a person). I want non-Christians and mainstream Christians to know just how welcome they will feel in a religious state, which is what the fundamentalists would love to have (Just one speaker saying they would burn all the Harry Potter books would be worth a few thousand votes for us, I'd think).

And what's this garbage about Dems not having family values? The problem with Repukes is that their concept of family is outdated-we're not living in the '50s any more. Our concept of family is inclusive, and honors all kinds of families-theirs doesn't.

(like the Dem stories you cite) as the Convention approaches -- beyond the LA Times, and Ray Taliaferro (referenced upthread).
