NYDailyNews:Did Bush show 'reckless disregard' for our health after 9/11?
Breaking: Did "W" show 'reckless disregard' for our health after 9/11?

The Bush administration showed “reckless disregard” for public health after the World Trade Center collapse by failing to warn people of the health risks of breathing toxic smoke and dust at ground zero, an environmental group said Wednesday.
Hundreds of people were sickened because of mistakes made by the government during the recovery and cleanup effort following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack, the Sierra Club said in a report on the environmental and health impacts of the collapse.

According to the report, the EPA failed at least a dozen times to change its safety assurances about the air quality at ground zero, even after it became clear that people were becoming sick, and in some cases, did not even check for toxic hazards.

Last year, the EPA’s internal watchdog found the agency, at the urging of White House officials, gave misleading assurances there was no health risk from the dust in the air after the towers’ collapse. Seven days after the attack, the EPA announced that the air near the site was safe to breathe, but the agency did not have enough information to make such a guarantee, the EPA’s report found.

Mattei accused the Bush administration of ignoring the potential health risks because of political expediency.

“They wanted to reopen the stock exchange in Lower Manhattan as quickly as possible and I think they wanted to put forth the image that everything was OK,” she said.

1. Christine Whitman
"We didn't want to scare people," Whitman
said, explaining why she didn't object when the
White House deleted the EPA's warnings on
New York's air quality.

13. Will Bushco assure those harmed get the necessary medical
care and financial remuneration commensurate with the harm caused, commensurate with what courts often award when such harm is caused by an individual or company?

9. That's a joke.....the entire * platform is fear!
Fear is the major tool in their arsenal - they just deploy it for maximum effect! Perhaps they didn't have their fear playbook completed yet.....

24. Oh yeah, like the Fearmongers of the Century didn't want to scare people.
JEEZ!

I guess they figured that was not the time when they needed to scare people. It's mainly when they realize they're sinking in the polls or the news around them is not good that they need to up the scaring-people routine. But back then, they had everybody in the palms of their hands.

BASTARDS!!! November can't come SOON ENOUGH!!!!!!

The Bush administration ignored studies about the toxins emitted by the demolition and incineration of large structures such as the trade center, the report said, and should have issued a warning immediately after the attacks about the hazards of inhaling the air there.

Ironically, I moved away from downtown Jersey City, New Jersey (across the river from the WTC area) the weekend before 9/11. When I spoke with my former landlord about two months later, she said the smell had lingered for weeks.

A talking head on one of the cable news shows had an interesting theory: Bush had to strongarm the EPA into LYING about the air quality around WTC because the public was still "too traumatized" by the attacks to be hit with more bad news! So the only solution was to endanger their lives and hope for the best?

So how many more WTC victims will there be over the years due to lung diseases from breathing that stuff? Will the victims be able to get inexpensive health insurance and perscription drugs?

I'm e-mailing this link to the Kerry camp--it reflects on the lack of Bush's character AND competence. It sounds like something they can run with...

4. So typical of this administration.
1. Put corporate profits ahead of human health and well-being.

2. Hide the truth and promote lies about everything being "fine."

We're seeing the same thing in JEB's Florida right now.

10. The Bushies will say:
"President Bush had confidence in statements made by the EPA, afterall he visited the site himself."

Does someone know how many days after 9/11 Bush actually arrived in New York and how long he stayed?

12. Shit, this is "News"?
There were stories all over this two years ago, and lots of coverage around the time Ditzy Clod Witless left to "spend more time with her family".

Leave it to the NYDN to be right on top of this important breaking story. What a sorry heap of cat logs that paper is (though admittedly, nowhere near as horrible as the Post).

21. Yes, we knew the story
& most New Yorkers knew the story...one of the reasons they hate Bush.

But it does not hurt to raise the story again during the convention.

It shows Bush disdain for NY, while using 9/11 for political gain.

27. hatrack study is new & who has heard all about it?
Study done, is new and a follow up, because of the all the new health problems happening in NY.

And who knew all about it? Most people outside of NY, have no idea what you're talking about when you mention it, it got very little media coverage.

Same with the aid promised New York, that never came. Very little if any national coverage.

If you ever want to show the rest of this country what a lying, hypocritical, exploitative S.O.B bush really is, you need look no further than his neglectful treatment of NY.

NY is 49th on Homeland Security's list for funds to combat terrorism. In a city where 3,000 people died that obsecene.

Think this says it all...."It may be that there's some weird terrorist out there who really wants to destroy a Kansas wheat field. I doubt it," Nadler said. "But the real threat is here and in Washington -- we know that from the intelligence we have.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-New York, said he believes the Republican Party chose New York for its convention site "to make this campaign about national security and the fight against terrorism. If that is the case, we have three words for them -- bring it on."

Ny'ers dont hate bush because we are all democrats, we hate him because of the way he has treated this city.

14. How about "complete indifference"?
Not once has he reacted first with any real sympathy toward victims, much less action, far less than paying up on even politically pt profitable promises. This typical disdain bears a decadent "royal" stamp that is so deep in the character no ordinary American can easily credit it, insofar as the political machine grinds out meaningless pap to pacify the masses that occasionally calls for the elite to posture otherwise. Ugh, the necessity of placating the masses while we still have democratic power.

And the entire administration acts this way. people issues are side issues. It's about power, prestige, money- all theirs.

Those wondering about the constant neglect keep missing the general attitude of total indifference to human suffering which is the main soul of the RW, into which they wearily fall back, onto divans eating grapes, when the plebes stop bleating and those duties of state fall off the radar. Eventually they can't even prosecute their own wars and schemes in their own best interests. But what the hey? Don't they have all the power? Just shut up and stop whining.

16. Add this to the use of our military in Iraq....and we have a very nice
meme indeed....

And some more...I think "wreckless disregard" should be Kerry campaingn theme...............

"Bush showed wreckless disregard in his use of the military following 911 to go into an unecessary war with Iraq."

Bush shows wreckless disregard for the health of our children ....list of environmental abuses follows....

Bush shows wreckless disregard in pandering to drug companies when it comes to seniors' health...

Bush shows wreckless disregard for the health of our economy by wracking up record deficits while pading the pockets of the top 1% and corporatations.

22. Hating NY
Its not talked about but there are a number of powerful people in DC like Sen. Nichols of OK or Lott in AL who could give a fuck about NY before, during or after 9/11. It was a crime that lower Manhattan was giving a clean bill of health within days of the attack and Whitman should go down in infamy for allowing it to happen.

In the end this sham was bulldozed through by a combination of powerful non-northeastern NY haters and criminal accomplices like Whitman.

I want that full story

Nothing like poisoning the survivors of the 9/11 victims is there? You all got sick? too bad! You'r 49th on the Homeland Security's List for funds? Tough! But Boo Hoo, Hand those Repukes some flags, they'll be waving them, while crying a river when the cameras come on, in front of Ground Zero.

I want the full story to get out too, but it hasnt by now & I doubt it ever will. Sad.

Glad they're finally realizing this enough to put it in the paper. How 'bout that. Took 'em long enough, but nicely timed to greet the republi-CONS at the end of the month. Looks like New Yorkers will be welcoming them kinda like the Iraqis did. Evidently, the republi-CONS are still expecting some sort of cakewalk in NYC. Maybe wolfowitz and contradicta and the rest of the neocons are advising them on their convention, too.

Oh yeah - and Sleepless in NY and Al Z - Welcome to DU!

25. Don't forget the tinfoil-hat ramifications here....
Think about it. This was an EPA that had been under Bill Clinton for eight years and under George Bush for only a little more than eight months at the time of the WTC attacks and was certainly not loaded with Bush sympathizers. The EPA is not likely to ever be a hotbed of right-wingers, under any circumstances. As far as I know, very little EPA work is classified. Yet, The Bushes were able to keep the lid on this dynamite story for around two years. Kind of makes you wonder how many would-be whistle-blowers got visits from personal friends of George Bush to encourage them to keep their mouths shut.

31. By the way, has anyone seen Bush's new ad?
The one where he says.."I can't imagine a parent having to decide which child to pick up from school on 9/11"

Please! These are the same children his administration told the air and water was safe after 9/11, when he knew it wasn't.

How does bush get away with this?
