CBS News: Three More American Troops killed in Iraq (1 US Army, 2 Marines)
Only 1 US Army has been added at icasualties since this morning, and he was KIA 08/16. I think CBS is referring to 3 more KIA today.

No link: announced during CBS Evening News.

1. what is the total amount of Americans killed in Iraq?
I have a sign on my front lawn that I try to update daily. People are not aware of the total numbers because it is not being reported, nor are the dead Americans being recognized by their own government, their bodies snuck in in the dark of night as their flag drapped coffins are unloaded and photographers are forbidden to photograph them.

I have a number of 935 on there now, but I heard on the M Malloy show that it was 980.

Is it 980?

2. 950 today
According to Bartcop.com. Sourcing is difficult to verify. Not sure even the U.S. Military knows for sure.

3. According to Lunaville is 950 servicemen
There have also been about 40-50 U.S. Citizen contractors killed in Iraq.

So it is getting close to the 1000 mark

4. 1,078 coalition military, ~16,000 Iraqis, mostly innocent civilians
I object to the habit of only counting American fatalities ... just as I'd object to only counting the white fatalities.

10. 16k?!
You're going to need to apply some multiplication to this figure.. that much from the various neighborhoods of the capital alone.

21. Aljazeera reports 37,000 Iraqi civilians were killed ...
... between March and October of 2003. The most frequently cited figure I've heard from 'independent' sources and on DU has been 16,000.

Obviously, they're not counted because they don't count. Right? :puke:

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/66E32EAF-0E4E-4765-9339-594C323A777F.htm

"The only serious independent attempt to collate war statistics is the Iraq Body Count Project, which involves both US and British academics. The project's website currently places Iraq's civilian toll at between 11,000 and 13,000."

When I go to the website for the Iraq Body Count Project, I get ...
Reported Minimum - 11,609
Reported Maximum - 13,591

http://www.iraqbodycount.net/

Everyone has a choice of what they believe. I personally don't believe the fatalities have reached a 30::1 ratio. From exxperience, I'd say 20::1 seems more like it, as shocking and appalling as even that is.

5. The video should be up soon...
CBS News should have a video of this report on their website soon. I'm not sure where they got their information, as I've only heard of one soldier being killed in Sadr City.

6. Did they happen to say where?
I am told that at least one Army member has been killed in Madinat as-Sadr, with dozens more injured in fighting during the last couple days. The two Marines would thus either be in Fallujah/Ramadi or an-Najaf..?

12. Until we hit 1,000, and Ted Koppell will do a Reading of the Names...
... and pundits will pop up on television asking ABC why they hate America so much, and local affiliates will boycott the broadcast, showing "Blind Date" instead.

Once again, the national topic of conversation will be "What are the political motivations behind the reporting of 1,000 dead" instead of "WHY ARE 1,000 DEAD???"

Same story. Different dateline. Same sense of nausea and disbelief.

17. Rummy got his way
He said that he wasn't concerned about losing men in "onesies and twosies." The media didn't widely report this statement, and now they seem to have internalized the lack of concern.

19. We are going to break the 1,000 KIA mark before Fall
How many more will die before our political leadership admits they made a mistake and brings all of the troops home?

20. You may well be right
We are currently looking at a trend of between 50 and 60 every 30-day period. We are also looking at an intensification of operations by both the US military and the widespread Iraqi insurgency. So, given that we are 33 days away from the beginning of fall, and 48 deaths away from 1000, it is entirely likely that we will reach 1000 before fall.

It is worthwhile reflecting on this outside the pure numbers and calculations. It is not only possible, but probable, that 50 young men and women - in the prime of life and full of energy - with families that love them, with histories and memories, with childhoods, caresses, open futures, intellects, loves, secret longings, glances, pleasures, desires, tastes, favorite cars and sports teams, devotions, loyalties, fears, minor gripes, pet peeves, scars and old injuries, friends, deformations, hairstyles, dances, ways of laughing and crying, sexual techniques, and deep piercing thoughts and faces - those faces, those faces, those hidden faces, it is entirely possible, and even probable, I say, that 50 of these young men and women with these qualities in unique mixes and predicable blends, will be dead before the beginning of fall. And a thousand more with the same qualities will also be dead, having the misfortune to be born in another geographical space, at another point on the surface of this great writhing world. Those faces...

22. It took about ten years for the Russians to hit 10,000 dead in Afghanistan
Ten thousand dead Russians, I mean. This looks to be on track for American deaths at about the same scale now. Let's hope it ends long before that.
