Factory jobs hit a new low in state

August 19, 2004

BY JOHN GALLAGHER

The Michigan economy stumbled in July, losing another 7,000 jobs, pushing one of the nation's worst unemployment rates even higher, and ensuring that workplace worries will be a major issue in this fall's presidential election.

The state's factories again bore the brunt of the cutbacks, eliminating 16,000 more positions and reducing the number of manufacturing jobs below 700,000 for the first time since Michigan began keeping records.

July was a disappointing month across much of the nation. After adding nearly 600,000 jobs in April and May, hiring fell off dramatically with only 78,000 new jobs created in June and 32,000 in July -- far short of the half-million economists had expected.

Although that was at least enough to push the national unemployment rate down one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.5 percent in July, that wasn't the case in Michigan.

1. Kerry's been leading in most Michigan polls for a couple of months, now
It drives the Michigan freepers nuts, they all go off about how Detroit ruins their state and all. They don't like the whole majority rule thing when they lose. Look for them to make all kinds of accusations of voter fraud in Detroit, instead of recognizing the truth-since 2000, more people in Detroit have voted than did in the elections in the 80s and 90s. Because it worked for the dems, I'd look for it to continue in the future. They control the legislature in Michigan, because of redistricting related to population shifts, but the bulk of the population still lives in 3 counties.

3. Ahhhhhhh, my old home state
sometimes I miss Michigan, I grew up in Detroit. The administration likes to tout all the new jobs available. There are new jobs and I got one! The problem? It pays about half of what I made 5 years ago.
Let's resurrect the slogan. "It's the economy stupid!"
