A very unusual race

By MATTHEW VAN DUSEN
Star-Tribune staff writer Thursday, August 19, 2004

Natrona County Clerk Mary Ann Collins won't have much trouble recounting the ballots in the House District 57 Libertarian primary race.

There are only seven of them.

Hubert Townsend defeated Tim DeLany by a count of 4 to 3 votes, a 14 percent margin of victory, in Tuesday night's primary election for the Libertarian nomination for the Casper area seat.

Under Wyoming's election code, a recount is automatic if the margin of victory is less than 1 percent of the winner's votes. But because 1 percent of four votes is 0.04 votes, and elections work in whole votes, the number must be rounded up to one vote.

There's your recount.
