Unknown Object Hovering In St. Paul Sky

Aug 19, 2004 7:21 pm US/Central

St. Paul (AP) There's an unknown object hovering in the sky over the Twin Cities, and it doesn't appear to be a bird or a plane.

Meteorologist Tony Zaleski of the National Weather Service in Chanhassen says the white object appears to be higher than the white, whispy cirrus clouds, which means it's probably higher than 30,000 feet.

Although the object looked like it might be rotating, it doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Zaleski says that probably would rule out a satellite.

Patrick Hogan at the Metropolitan Airports Commission says folks in the tower at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport thought it might be a weather balloon. But Zaleski says if that's true, the Weather Service didn't release it.

What kind of play is this getting in the local media?

Any other information?

A possible theory: this is the secret attack craft that * used to down Wellstone's plane - and it's out on another test run.

25. Hey Minstrel Boy, did you read about the shape shifting metal
"Shape-shifting Metal Rubber has science world abuzz
A shape-shifting material known as Metal Rubber is joining cockroaches, Twinkies and Keith Richards on the list of things most likely to survive a nuclear holocaust."

http://www.canada.com/search/results.html?searchfor=metal

You need a subscription for the full article. My paper edition of the Edmonton Journal had this story on Tuesday:

"Miracle Material Metal Rubber Bounces Back from Anything
...An invention of chemists at NanoSonic in Blackburg, Va., Metal Rubber is the stuff of which comic book legends are made. According to the new issue of Popular Science, you can "twist it, stretch it double, fry it to 200 C, douse it with jet fuel" and it will survive every time.
When the abuse stops, the material "snaps like a rubber back to its original shape, all the while conducting electricity like solid metal"...
...proposals to use Metal Rubber to make artificial muscles, as well as aircraft that change aerodynamics in response to environmental and physical conditions..."

Does it remind you of anything?

30. Yeah, that's the one - Roswell, 1947
The descriptions of this metal sound eerily similar to what the Roswell witnesses claimed. That doesn't necessarily prove anything, but it is consistent with their stories. Some people discounted their stories on the basis the metal with those properties just wasn't possible.

It is also an interesting coincidence that the same week as the news of this metal is released, the New Mexico governor demands that the Roswell incident be re-examined.

The white color and the 30,000 foot altitude are totally consistent with a weather balloon.

These things can go many miles from the launch point and are also launched by people other than the National Weather Service.

Does anyone have a link to a photo of this?

Maybe I've seen "They Live" too many times, but..

http://www.kdlh.com/news/headlines/938687.html

snip:

Bush was introduced by Saint Paul Mayor Randy Kelly, who was elected as a democrat, but made headlines a few weeks ago by endorsing Bush's reelection bid.

Former Georgia Senator Max Cleland, who lost both legs and an arm in Vietnam, led a "Veterans for Kerry" rally across from the XCel Center in anticipation of the president's visit.

Cleland challenged Bush's assertions that the Iraq war was justified. "Why is this president not providing a strategy to win or a strategy to get out? Why is it an open-ended commitment? Why are more and more young men and women dying?" Cleland said.

Both sides continue to remain on opposite ends on key issues and the debate promises to get more heated as the election gets closer.

St. Paul was the president's last stop on a bus tour that began Wednesday morning in Wisconsin.

But if it was aliens and they tried to take over our planet, would fighting against them make us terrorists?

Also, the National Weather Service claimed they didn't release the balloon. Sounds odd. Not the most common object.

I was tossed off of FR when I posted my essay that compared the Iraqi people to the Southerners during the Civil War. Of course, I made the distinction that the Iraqis were never a part of the USofA and when we invaded Iraq, we invaded a sovereign nation that was oceans away from us. And of course, I also pointed out that the Southerners fired the first shot and began the Civil War after they secceeded, thus they were the traitors that were attacking and killing the troops of the USofA, the Americans.

That essay sure pissed off a bunch of folks at Freeper land!

45. It may be one of those high altitude spy baloons...
I saw a televised news report several months ago about a new spy baloon to be used by the military. From what I recall, they can hover up to around 60 or 70 thousand feet and are equipped with sensitive camera and audio equipment. The reason they fly so high is to avoid anti-aircraft fire.

Supposedly, based on the report, the military was planning on using them in the mainland United States in addition to overseas.

things that hover in the sky but are not a bird or a plane do exist. The military do have helicopter-like remote control reconnaissance drones. Though i wouldn't expect those to operate at 30,000 feet nor is it likely they are visible from the ground when at that altitude.
It could be a baloon of sorts, not a weather baloon but a military observation platform. That would explain why the Weather Service didn't release it.
Still the question remains: why no pictures?

59. It's the alien lizards. They realize that Bush may lose the election,
so they're sending in back up.

Don't vote for Bush! He's an alien lizard!

71. "Understanding UFOs and the Media: Puncturing a Myth"
From a good, recent piece by Richard Dolan, author of "UFOs and the National Security State", on how such stories are covered and disappeared by the media:

Regarding the belief in UFO disclosure through the media, my point is this: when you look at the obvious "management and above" media outlets, you find nothing of a serious nature relating to UFOs. This is because management classes historically have relatively narrow ranges of acceptable beliefs. The first requisite of a successful ruling elite is that it share important foundational assumptions about its society and interests.

...

As far as UFOs are concerned, all you have to do is study the management-oriented media to understand that believing in the existence of unexplained, highly advanced technology traversing the skies and oceans of this world is simply not acceptable. Not if you are a member of the management class.

To say the least, this is an idea that could be unsettling to the stability of those who rule. How to admit that UFOs are real after almost 60 years of incessant denial, without compromising the very political system upon which you’ve relied to keep things moving smoothly and profitably? Especially if (speaking hypothetically, here) certain of your members reap incredible profits from ground-floor investments in technologies that were adapted from sources that aren’t supposed to exist?

On the other hand, from the perspective of power, it doesn’t really matter what the bottom 80 or even 90 percent think. If they want to believe in aliens, or bigfoot, or conspiracy notions pertaining to the Kennedy assassination (another verboten topic for our management class), then by all means they can. Better yet, turn all that stuff into cheesy entertainment, keeping the rabble happily distracted while at the same time you disable these topics from entering the realm of "serious" discussion.

72. It's probably Venus
People don't realize how bright Venus is or how high it can get in the sky. Pilots have been killed chasing it into the strastophere, not realizing they don't have a hope in hell of catching it.

75. Whether Venus, swamp gas,
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 01:16 PM by FlaGranny
or weather balloons, there's always an explanation. The trouble is I've seen a couple of things with my own eyes that were "unidentified" but demonstrably none of those things. We make so much fun of this stuff, just like they want us to. If we ridicule and laugh at anyone who reports seeing something strange, it is ever so much easier to hide in plain sight. I know that crackpots and crazy folks abound, but not every witness to something unusual is a crackpot.

Just two months ago, my cousin and I, both ladies in our 60's saw an unidentified flying object. When we first saw it, directly overhead, it was round, white, and about the apparent size of a basketball. It traveled very fast and completely silently, upwards at about a 100 to 110 degree angle. The clouds were fair weather type, probably 5000 to 6000 feet in altitude. The object traveled UNDER one cloud and over the next and disappeared behind the clouds. When it left our sight, after about 3-4 seconds, it had diminished in apparent size, so that I would estimate when we first saw it, it was between 1-2000 feet in altitude, and 3-4 seconds later it was at and rapidly passing 5-6000 in altitude as evidenced by passing under one cloud and over the next. Just as it went between those clouds, it did a small zig-zag maneuver. Now was that from outer space? I certainly doubt it was. But I have no doubt it was real and not something the general public is familiar with. I am very much not in the habit of "seeing things."

I posted the above sighting in a thread on DU and had another poster tell me it was probably a satellite. Rather funny, when you think about it. Someone thinks it is more likely that a satellite could be orbiting at 6000 feet than for us to have seen a probably secret experimental aircraft of some kind.

As long as "they" can keep you laughing and calling things like this venus, swamp gas, and such, and ridiculing anyone who sees something, well, like I said, they can hide in plain sight. It is obvious to anyone who actually sees one that neither swamp gas nor venus is an acceptable answer. "They" are experimenting with "stuff."

And now, I know I have identified myself to some as a "kook." So be it.

Edit: Not to say YOU were ridiculing anyone. I guess I should have posted this in reply to the original message. Didn't mean to sound like I was picking on you. :-)

82. I saw it and that was my guess.
I was at a playground with my kid in Hopkins MN at about 7 pm central. I saw a white spot straight over me. I could not detect any motion, so I thought it must be a planet, but it could have been a high altitude balloon. It was odd, but I didn't think it was a "UFO", even if it was unknown to me.

83. Venus would have set by 5:35 yesterday in Minneapolis
It was well below the horizon by 7:00 (according to a copy of Skyglobe I have on my computer, a nice little astronomy program). It would never be very high when you could see it (evening star, morning star).

The balloon could be another story, though.

77. Its probably one of those new unmanned eye in the sky things
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 01:32 PM by MaryH
that have been developed to keep watch over the borders. They have cameras in them but are not manned - I don't think. I saw pictures and when they were tested tons of people called in that aliens were coming. The on white and circular and can hover pretty high up - I forget how hig but higher than I imagined.

An unmanned kind of little sputnik that reports back to control with all kinds of info. Could be used for anything.

See my post above. That is identical to the object I was describing in my post above. My sighting was in Florida.

Edit: The thing I saw was definitely no weather balloon because it was traveling in a direction against the cloud movement (but at the same altitude).

86. Just out of curiousity
I checked the National Storm Prediction Center's winds aloft for this morning. Winds at the 250 mb level were around 75 knots from the WSW. A baloon of any type would have trouble staying in one place for too long.
