NYT: Olympic Officials Fault Bush Ad
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 10:22 PM by kskiska
For some reason, this is tacked onto the end of a Kerry article.

ATHENS, Aug. 19 - The United States Olympic Committee has asked the Bush campaign to stop using the Olympic name in commercials. Federal law grants the U.S.O.C. exclusive rights to the name.

The campaign recently began running an ad that shows a swimmer, with flags of Afghanistan and Iraq. An announcer says: "Freedom is spreading throughout the world like a sunrise. And this Olympics, there will be two more free nations and two fewer terrorist regimes.''

"We're awaiting a reply," Darryl Seibel, a U.S.O.C. spokesman, said.

4. Aah, those tightwad, control-freak bastards bite Bush too.
I have no love for the goddamned Olympic committee, who went as far as to make a diners named the Olympic Diner to change their names despite the fact that Mt.Olympia is a place in Greece and the word has been in use for thousands of years.

I wonder if the Olympic officials would have a bad attitude towards that, too??

I would hope.

It asks that you play the "John Kerry's Flip Flop Olympics".

Someone needs to forward that to the Olympics Committee for their assessment, don't you think?

9. Well, when they have NO accomplishments of their own ...
... they have to try to take credit for the hard work and accomplishments of others. It's their habit; after all, they're the "ownership class." They've never done anything on their own.

Words of advice: Never get stranded on a desert island with any of those people. (Unless you like the taste of "long pig.")

12. Bush in strife over Olympic mention
From correspondents in Washington
August 21, 2004

US President George W. Bush's re-election campaign will continue to run a television advertisement that mentions the Olympics, despite questions about whether that violates the by-laws for the Games.

US Olympic Committee officials had contacted the campaign about the ad and were awaiting a reply, USOC spokesman Darryl Seibel said in Athens today.

But campaign spokesman Scott Stanzel said there were no plans to pull the ad.
<snip>

An act of Congress, last revised in 1999, grants the USOC exclusive rights to such terms as "Olympic", derivatives such as "Olympiad" and the five interlocking rings. It also specifically says the organisation "shall be non-political and may not promote the candidacy of an individual seeking public office".
