Next week, the group will accuse Kerry of demoralizing U.S. prisoners of war in Vietnam, saying Kerry's anti-war speeches when he returned from Vietnam were used by the North Vietnamese as propaganda.

The organization is funded by private sources. Its biggest contributor is Bob Perry, a Texas developer who has also given millions to the Republican Party.

McClellan declined to characterize President George W. Bush's ties to Perry other than to say, "I think he has been a supporter."

Likewise, McClellan declined to characterize any ties between Perry and Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, other than to say the two men know each other.

"We have not been involved in this ad whatsover," McClellan said. ..

McClellan kept referring to "shadowy groups" and unregulated soft money. The press corps kept asking him about the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group's ties to the Bushes, but McClellan wouldn't get into that. I would love it if someone asked him if Merrie Spaeth and Bob Perry comprise a "shadowy group."

The other thing McClellan kept repeating was that Senator Kerry was "losing his cool." Considering that Kerry was investigating Reagan administration scandals at a time when McClellan's boss, Bush, was still drinking and screaming obscenities at Al Hunt, I don't think it's wise for McClellan to keep harping on losing one's cool.
