AMARAH, Iraq (AP) - Iraqi police blamed militants loyal to a radical Shiite cleric for an attack on an oil pipeline near the southern city of Amarah on Friday.
Saboteurs blew up the pipeline in the south that connects the southern Bezergan oil field with a refinery in Amarah, 180 miles southeast of Baghdad, on Friday. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
"Mahdi Army elements set the pipeline on fire using explosives," said Lt. Wessam Mohammed, referring to the militia loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
Al-Sadr's militia has threatened to blow up oil wells and pipelines as part of an uprising against Iraqi and U.S. forces. Insurgents trying to destabilize the country's reconstruction efforts have frequently attacked pipelines in the north as well as the south, which exports 90 percent of the country's oil.
