Four States Deny Ballot Access to Nader
Four States Deny Ballot Access to Nader

By SAM HANANEL, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader (news - web sites) a suffered setbacks this week as election officials in Virginia, Maryland, Illinois and Missouri all denied him access to state ballots this fall.

In each case, officials said Nader campaign workers either did not submit enough valid signatures on ballot petitions or failed to follow proper procedures.

On Friday, Virginia's election board secretary, Jean Jensen, said Nader workers failed to meet state requirements that the signatures be grouped according to congressional district, and then by localities within each of the 11 districts.

"The State Board of Elections must apply the rules to all parties, and there was no reason to deviate from that policy," Jensen said.

The decision was a victory for John Kerry (news - web sites)'s campaign and for Virginia Democrats who believe even modest support for Nader could reduce Kerry's votes — and the party's chance of winning a presidential race in the state for the first time in 40 years.

1. GREAT NEWS!
Illinois and Maryland are safe, but no Nader really helps us out in Missouri and Virginia.

3. more lawsuits
Hopefully all of his campaign money will be spent on lawyers and court costs. Illinois and Maryland don't matter, but Virginia and Missouri are a victory.

4. As much as I disagree with Nader campaign, the DNC should, IMO...
should adopt a "battleground state only policy" when it comes to fighting Nader's ballot access.

In this case, fight Missouri and Virginia and give him Maryland and Illinois.

5. Give Kerry ...
10 for Maryland, and 21 for Illinois....Right? EQUALS 31 electoral votes.

That leaves 11 for Missouri, and 13 for Virginia! EQUALS 24 electoral votes.

6. No, fight him everywhere
The fewer state ballots he is on the legitimate his candidacy is, and the fewer state ballots he is on the less grounds he has for claiming that he should be included in the debates. Oh, and the fewer state ballots he is on pollsters will be discouraged from including him in their surveys.

7. Nooo! Don't Give Him Maryland, They've got DIEBOLD in Maryland
Without Nader in the race, it will stink to high heaven if they
use the machinez to steal the state.

This is VERY good news.

20. I think EVERY state's a "Battleground State" this time around.
That's old thinking.

So Rove has Shrub dancing in OH and MI whenever he's not at the pig farm banging Condi and getting drunk.

Wouldn't it be something if he won OH and LOST the other 49?

Every state is a battleground this time. There is a current of discontent out there. Democrats need to tap into this.

I'm most pissed that he's on the ballot in the upper midwest battleground states which Gore won by less than 1% (MN, but IA and WI in particuar).

Unfortunately he's also on the ballot in WV and AR...I don't know about OH and MI though.

Anyone hear about OR? How's he doin here?

Anyone have a list of the battleground states he's on?

Now there are several more states where anti-war people have no candidate on the ballot who supports their views.

:wtf:

You're joking, right?!

The Nader agenda is to be a spoiler, nothing more.

He no longer has the credibility to call himself a legitimate third party candidate. He is a shill for the * regime. He and Zell should be roomates. :puke:

on edit: typo

14. Nader is interested in one thing
his own EGO. I lost respect for him long ago. He doesn't give a F*** (can you use that word on this forum?) about the war or anything else. It's all about power.

If he wanted to make a difference, get a third party going, he'd run for Congress in a small, progressive area where he had a chance of getting elected. But how much TV coverage would he get?

26. What are you talking about?
"He no longer has the credibility to call himself a legitimate third party candidate."

Of course he does--Nader's stance on the war makes him an alternative to Bush and Kerry.

I wonder what you guys would have said about Eugene Debs and Henry A. Wallace, whose assessments of "progressive" opponents, Wilson and Truman, turned out to be correct?

19. Nader is only going to betray anyone who follows him
His actions as a spoiler serve to support the Bush campaign -
If not then why is the GOP trying to get him on the state ballots?

A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush. Seeing him locked out of more states is a GOOD think. An anti war platform is not served by a narciscistic meglomaniac.

16. I really don't think this will make much of a difference...
if people want to vote Kerry, they will vote Kerry; if they don't, they won't. The fact that Nader is off the ballot doesn't mean that he won't get write-in votes, nor does it mean that those who would ordinarily vote for him will suddenly decide to vote Kerry.

21. Anyone know which state ballots he IS going to be on?
Seems almost every week I hear about another state where he failed to get on, or was having real trouble. I didn't keep track of this info. Does anybody know which states he DID qualify to get on for Nov?

I'm glad to hear he didn't make it in Ill. and Mo. though.

22. Maine, with all of
4 electoral votes-has Nader on the ballot. But not to worry-the DP in Maine is challenging the signatures.--and losing supporters who might have voted for Kerry as a result.
