FERC Cuts Deal to Get Access to More Enron Tapes
FERC Cuts Deal to Get Access to More Enron Tapes

Fri Aug 20, 2004 03:47 PM ET
By Chris Baltimore

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department has agreed to give federal energy regulators access to 161 audio tapes seized in a probe of bankrupt Enron Corp., the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) said on Friday.

Previously released telephone transcripts that show Enron traders gloating about stealing money from "Grandma Millie" during California's 2000-01 energy crisis have renewed the call for refunds for Western electricity consumers at FERC.

FERC gained access to a new batch of tapes after cutting a deal with the Justice Department that will allow agency staff to review 52,000 hours of Enron trader phone chatter.

The tapes, seized in 2002 when the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched Enron offices in Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, Houston and Rutherford, New Jersey, will remain in FBI custody, according to court documents...cont'd

2. Two words: charter revocation
Dubya had no qualms about putting natural persons to death. Why should we hesitate to put so-called artificial persons to death?
I will gladly sign a death warrant for any corporation deserving to be executed. But our supposed leaders are a bunch of bought-off, mewling cowards.

5. I agree
We should be revoking the business charters of these rogue corporations.
If they break the law-break them. Take their property by eminent domain.

If they move jobs offshore, do not allow them to do business in the US.
If they wish, we can put a special tariff on their products to offset the money lost in the job shift-use the proceeds to pay for worker re-training and unemployment and lost health care and retirement.

If they don't pay their fair share of taxes, confiscate their property until the bill is paid.

If they steal employees retirement funds, confiscate the material wealth of the corporate leaders, sell the corporate property, until the bill is paid.

If they get laws passed to 'limit' frivolous lawsuits, jail the legislators, the corporate officers and close the business down.

No more shifting of the tax burden onto real people. No more tax corporate breaks or corporate welfare.
Screw the thieves.

3. Wonder if FERC will get the tapes then promptly bury them
As they have done with everything else which proves Enron bilked the average citizen.

4. ........I wonder if there are any tapes with Cheney or anyone in the Bush
administration that might link Enron more directly with the White House?

If so, I can imagine the tapes will be accidentally "lost" or burned, etc.
