Frozen Custard Costs George W. Bush $14,000
WorldNow and WBAY

Fourteen thousand dollars is a lot of money, especially if it's for a frozen custard cone. That's how much it cost the City of Oshkosh to protect President Bush when he campaigned in Northeast Wisconsin last month.

Oshkosh wasn't even on the president's list of planned stops. On the way from Fond du Lac to Ashwaubenon, the president and his daughter, Barbara, stopped at Leon's Frozen Custard for what appeared as an impulse visit (actually, the custard stand was scoped out by Secret Service agents just 20 minutes earlier).

Tonight a bill is in the mail to the Bush-Cheney campaign. The city provided Action 2 News with a copy of the invoice, which shows exactly how much the president's campaign visit cost local taxpayers. Republicans might describe it as "sticker shock."

"It seems very excessive for a drive-through, a couple of barricades, maybe an hour's worth of work," Michelle Litgens of the Winnebago County Republicans reacted.

According to the city, barricades, overtime for city employees such as the Department of Public Works, and vehicle support cost the city just over $4,000. Police overtime added $9,670. ..

2. I'm glad that some cities are starting to send bills Bush's way
I don't like this concept that he can fundraise and capaign for hours on the taxpayer's dime if he happens to spend 20 minutes meeting with someone to make it an official visit.

3. But that's not just Bush
Over the years our president has gathered more and more power onto himself way past where the constitution envisioned him going.

I don't think it's a Bush problem as much as an imperial presidency problem.

4. I agree
I think any president doing what Bush does (and what Clinton did, Bush did, Reagan did etc) should be charged. Just at the moment, the offender is Bush, and I'm going to bitch about him :-)

6. Unfortunately ...
... I think we the taxpayer ends up paying for that little visit thanks to the SS.

Didn't Clinton use to just wander off on a jog and stop in for a Big Mac?

9. Watch how your share grows day by day
That should be a wake up call to everyone. We can't afford this mismanagement.

10. And the bimbos and pretty boys covering the Kerry/Edwards appearance
in Bowling Green, Ohio last month were bemoaning that it cost the city around $20,000 in extra personnel and other expenses to accommodate the event, which drew over 15,000 people. $14,000 just to accommodate Bush getting an ice cream cone? Geez!
