TRAVERSE CITY - Ralph Thorpe thinks the 12,000 or so people who attended President George W. Bush's campaign rally here ought to shell out a buck or two to cover the cost to local government. ..

Traverse City estimated its police overtime costs at around $7,000, while Grand Traverse County is guessing expenses may run around $10,000. Grand Traverse will have a firmer number next week when it calculates its payroll. ..

He's no supporter of Democratic candidate John Kerry, but Thorpe said it would be great if Kerry came to Traverse City.

"I think the town of Traverse City should hear from both sides and I'll do this for a Kerry visit, too," he said.

paid. Public rallies are far different from private. And our tax dollars shouldn't pay for any security at private rallies.
