New Kerry Campaign Ad....McCain Slam-n Shrub

A quote from the Kerry web site....

"The ad, titled “Old Tricks,” features Senator John McCain rebuking then candidate Bush during a 2000 Larry King debate for refusing to disavow or condemn hateful and vicious attacks on McCain’s military record during the South Carolina Republican primary".

Here is the link..

40. right--he is obviously angry and holding back a sneer
and ready to bully McCain whatever way he can for the pointing to his cowardly, sneering, despicable lying about McCain's service and actually, the service of all veterans--the bastard could not even serve honorably himself and he is ready to sneer at McCain. Here is a man, if you can call him that, that is sending our young to die for nothing and on lies, that obviously has no respect whatsoever for any of them and for any of the families as he would smear them in an instant if it meant a political gain, having not attended one funeral and effectively sneaking their flag draped coffins back in the middle of the night with NO ONE honoring them as they are lifted off the plane. He has no respect for any of them and his willingness to smear them brutally, with despicable lies about their service should be a wake up call to all veterans out there, including those coming back from Iraq.

"I think what George hasn't been able to show very well because of the circumstances of his presidency — with September 11th and the war — is the soft side that he has," she said. "He's very loving and compassionate and really sweet."

She added: "He is a tough-talking guy, but there is a soft side to him that I don't think people have gotten to see."

31. Maybe not, here's why
If they asked McCain, then he would feel he had to say that it wasn't okay. They would then run the ad anyway.

The way they've done it, McCain can complain that he didn't give them permission if he wants (he probably won't) or he can just be silent, kind of like Bush is doing about the Swift Vets. By not asking McCain for his permission, they give him an out.

29. I wish they didn't cut off Bush's response though
I don't know what Bush said, but to cut him off when it looks like he's going to respond to McCain's "You should be ashamed" statement looks bad. I'm just looking at it from the viewpoint of someone who is undecided, or even from the Bush supporters side. Just like Chris Matthews is hot as hell that his Kerry interview was parsed down to a self serving sound bit by the Bush gang, I'm concerned that this could backfire.

39. This is the closest I can find for an answer to that.
I love the ad- it's fantastic for establishing * pattern of behavior, and agree that his current actions speak louder than his response at the time, but I admit curiosity also. I found this and I am still looking for more. Sounds like he did his usual 'I believe you have served nobly' crap, but then went on to try to excuse why he did this to McCain b/c McCain had "defined him" as like Bill Clinton. Not really an apology.

http://www.evote.com/index.asp?Page=/news_section/2000-02/02162000Bauer.asp

Here is a snip -

One of the debate's harsher moments came when McCain, a former prisoner of war, lectured Bush about a supporter who questioned McCain's commitment to veterans' issues.

``I don't know if you can understand this George, but that really hurts, '' said McCain, a former Navy pilot. ``That really hurts.''

Bush said he shouldn't be held responsible for what his backers say.

``I believe you have served your country nobly,'' Bush replied, adding there was a reason for his attacks. ``I kind of smiled my way through the early primaries and kind of got defined and I am not going to let that happen again.''

Bush pointed to earlier charges by McCain that compared Bush to President Clinton, and had a lecture of his own.

``Don't equate my integrity and trustworthiness to Bill Clinton,'' said Bush. ``That's about as low a blow as you can give in a Republican primary.''

a lot of sidestepping and cross blaming if you ask me. After reading this I remember seeing it and thinking I can't believe * is getting away with this. Alan Keyes was there too.

And there is one huge difference between that instance of slamming McCain and now slamming Kerry. Then it was mutual McCain went a little negative too -although never personally. Now, only * is being this negative, and personally so again, while Kerry is questioning policies, which as the challenger is what he is supposed to do.

36. Right on.
I agree with some posters here that in the interest of fairness, we should have seen the shrublet's response. But of course no advertising professional would let the enemy have the last word; it would be counterproductive. If it looks like an ad, it's because it is and ad.

Someone will dig up the answer soon. And knowing *, it will be a rambling and incoherent lie-- and we win again.

When Kerry said "bring it on", he wasn't kidding. He means to win, and I have renewed faith that his team knows what they are doing.

2. Freepers bombard news media with stories of this latest "outrage" by "Hanoi John" and send the URL along.

3. The ad becomes a Legitimate News Story.

4. The ad is run on the news. And run. And run. And run.

5. Kerry either disavows the ad or says something to cut the criticism off at the legs.

6. In the space of 20 days, the ad is downloaded and seen by approximately 35 million people.

7. Karl Rove's physician increases Rove's Lopressor to 100 mg 3 times a day.

72. OR
1. Kerry campaign gives TV stations money.

2. Ad runs for about a week - to be followed with even harsher attacks if Dubya doesn't call off the dogs.

did McCain approve the playing of this or does that matter?

EDIT: N/m I saw it further up. I believe that they did NOT ask, but told him ahead of time, so that he could rebuff it later on. The courtesy was to give him the heads up that it was coming out though.

GREATJOB! AWesome!! Thanks!

If Kerry gave McCain the heads-up that this was coming out, that was the right thing to do, and it's all that is owed.

He is on the public record about *'s campaign tactics. If he's going to campaign for * after all of that -- not only in 2000, but recently -- I don't mind if Kerry and the progressives call him out on it.

McCain has gone through some unimaginable things in his life. He can survive this. Someday he might even be glad he got challenged for this inconsistency.

71. Excellent ad.
I would like to see the Kerry campaign begin demanding that not only Bush denounce the ads but also that all republicans denounce them. I think this could put some pressure on moderate republicans in several States. I have written my republican Senator, several republican Congressmen, and the republican candidate for Governor asking that they denounce the ad.

99. The DNC can't run the ad -- it's produced by the Kerry campaign
it would be illegal coordination if the DNC ran it, I believe.

But of course, sending money to the DNC so that they can do other activities frees some of Kerry's money up so that the campaign can run the ad

"George Bush is up to his old tricks."
LIAR!

The President has nothing to do with this ad, and even the phrase "old tricks" is overloaded with hate.

John McCain, its Dday. Whose side are you on? "You're either for us or against us." You can't continue this game.

Kerry is going about this the wrong way. He campaigns with the promise to get those who hate the USA to come around and be friendly. Well, here's his opportunity to show his diplomatic side, to get the SwiftVets to come around and be more friendly to him.
It's a golden opportunity, John. Whatever you do, don't just whine and stamp your feet, and demand they shut up.

87. Thanks for the post
I love reading their meltdowns.

Does McCain really think these nutcases will give him the nomination in 08 or is he really hoping for a Kerry victory?

He has to know he has zero chance of being the nominee, so why doesn't he be a man and campaign for his REAL friend.

Congrats to the campaign. There is nothing debatable about this ad. Bush will need to cover up and back away. He is not down for the eight count quite yet. They need to load up with a few more. No doubt Bush will leave more openings. But this is a really good start.

90. My letter to my puke rep
Dear Rep. Bono,
As you know, this area has lots of veterans, and I understand, that as a loyal Republican party member, you profess tho support our vets. Well, the time has come to show it. These "swiftboat liars for Bush", are spewing venous lies at an honored VN vet, like Senator John Kerry. These ads have come from the same people who slandered Senator McCain in South Carolina during the election primaries, in behalf of George W. Bush. This type of filth insults all our heroic veterans, and dishonors the service, and honors of all. This is the same kind of nasty politics that was was used against Max Cleland,in Georgia. Then they morphed him into Osama Bin Laden because he believes that the new department of Homeland Security employees should have the right to collective bargaining, unions. His patriotism was reviled by the candidate Saxby Chambliss, who himself dodged Vietnam, because of bad knees. He is , incidentally , a jogger, so I am told. This type of politics insults Americans, and drags the GOP on a race to the bottom. For a party who claims to protect American Culture and spins about' values' ad nauseum; they are sure contributing to the coarsness of our society.
I call on you to band with others, in the moribund moderate wing of the Republican Party, to denounce these Ads, and demand that M. Bush have them stopped

The same one that some outlets of the "Liberal Media" still claim was Kerry's "First Choice" for Veep (a fuckin' UN-TRUTH!)?

A lot of Progressive people need to GET OVER their love affair with McCain. Sure, Rove wiped his ass all over the guy in '00, but John is a true-blue fair-dinkum ReTHUG.

He put in a sleepless night doing putting it together Friday, then celebrated by seeing Uncle Shamus' first show not a quarter of a mile from Bush campaign headquarters.

I thanked him. If you like, you can imagine that I thanked him for all of us.
