N.J. governor defends delay in resignation ...
TRENTON, N.J. (AP)

In a newspaper opinion piece published Sunday, New Jersey's embattled governor says his decision not to leave office immediately because of a sex scandal was "difficult" to make but one he will not change.

Democratic Gov. James E. McGreevey used The New York Times to defend his Nov. 15 resignation date, which has been criticized roundly by both Republicans and members of his own party. McGreevey announced Aug. 12 he is leaving his post because he had an extramarital affair with a man.

"While I see the merits of both sides of the debate, I stand firm with my decision," McGreevey wrote in the Times. "My obligation is to complete the important work already started and to achieve an effective transition of state government."

Meanwhile, an attorney for Golan Cipel -- who has been identified as the man with whom McGreevey had an extramarital affair -- said the governor's associates told Cipel not to go public about his relationship with the governor or face deportation. ..

1. Deportation would have been the least of Cipell's problems

We only have Cipell's word for it that the relationship wasn't consensual. If it's true that he's had affairs with other men though he's recently denied being gay, he's got a BIG credibility problem. And if Cipell tried to get McGreevey to pay him not to file sexual harassment charges that he knew weren't true, he's guilty of extortion even if he did use a lawyer.

I hope McGreevey's last act will be arranging it so that Cipell can be picked up for questioning should he set foot on U.S. soil again. And I figure that the least McGreevey can do for the Democratic party is keep the governor's chair out of the GOP's reach. Do you think a REPUBLICAN wouldn't be doing what McGreevey is?
