Iraqi Captors Free Manhattan Journalis

Manhattan journalist Michael Garen was freed Sunday more than a week after he was kidnapped by militants in Iraq.

An aide to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced the release, and then Garen confirmed it during a telephone interview with the Arabic-language news network Al Jazeera.

Garen and his Iraqi translator were abducted in the southern city of Nasiriyah on August 13. In a video that aired on Al Jazeera last Thursday, the kidnappers had threatened to kill Garen within 48 hours if U.S. troops did not leave the holy city of Najaf.

Even though his militia has been battling American troops and official Iraqi forces for control of a mosque in Najaf, al-Sadr interceded to win Garen’s release.

1. I hope Iraqis know it doesn't help their cause...

to kidnap journalists. Especially when governments
don't care about journalists: the fewer, the better.
We need more on the ground and dissadent Iraqis
should want more news coverage not less.

2. well, it was Al-Sadr who intervened on his behalf to get him released

so yeah, I think they know that, esp. since Four Corners Media that this journalist is affiliated with is an independent media organization, and he was there working on a documentary about the archeological looting and cultural destruction that happened during the war & the aftermath.
