Edvard Much's "The Scream" stolen from a musuem
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5787000/

OSLO, Norway - Armed, masked thieves burst into a lightly guarded Oslo museum Sunday and snatched the Edvard Munch masterpiece “The Scream” and a second Munch painting from the walls as stunned visitors watched in shock.

6. I have a print in my house
and an inflatable 'screamer' in my office. They keep me sane. I hope the perpetrators get a 'screaming moment' in the near future, and that it lasts well into the future! Greedy pricks.

7. Collecting stolen artwork seems very strange
Thorsten Veblen talked about conspicuous consumption and the leisure class. The point of conspicuous consumption is to show off to the world your wealth and power. Hidden consumption just doesn't seem to have a purpose.

I suppose you can show off to a very select group. Again, though, it is the publicness of the act of showing off prized possessions that gives it meaning, so it just doesn't seem to make sense.

I suppose if it an open secret among the rich and powerful who owns these stolen works (including the police, who may be powerless to do anything about it), then it would serve to show off wealth and power.

I think you hit the nail on the head- and it is really sick to think about the ego that this behavior entails...
