Iraqi arms scientists killed before they talk
THE WASHINGTON TIMES (raag)

I dare you to read this entire piece without laughing.

Anti-coalition forces have killed a prominent Iraqi chemical-weapons scientist whom U.S. investigators were questioning at Abu Ghraib prison, in an attempt to unravel the mysteries of Saddam Hussein's arsenal.
The scientist's death is not the first such killing, and it has some U.S. analysts wondering whether there is a pattern and also whether the Iraqi insurgents had incredibly good intelligence and a deadly aim — or were just lucky. ..

But then one night, the insurgents fired a volley of mortar rounds into the prison. One landed near enough to kill the chemical expert. Any chance that he might have disclosed information on what happened to Saddam's stocks of chemical shells vanished in the explosion.

The death is at least the fourth hostile- fire killing of Iraqi scientists who had been talking to the ISG. There have been press reports that as many as nine have been slain.

One of the country's most prominent nuclear scientists, Majid Hussein Ali, was found dead earlier this year, shot twice in the back. He had been questioned by the ISG. ..

A U.S. intelligence official, who asked not to be named, confirmed to The Washington Times that the scientist at Abu Ghraib was killed by a mortar round. But he said officials think it was a lucky shot, because the insurgents have a poor record on mortar accuracy. ..

3. This could be true, in a way
Iraqi scientists who would blow the whistle on the Reagan/Bush I/Bush II lies might be getting killed, by the CIA or Allawi's boys. This story could be cover for such a program.

5. Makes me wonder
Way back in the day quite a few starving Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror writers used to write porn for a living. You know the really bad kind that demands bad 70's music.

Makes me wonder if the next generation gave up on Porn as it has too many amateurs these days and instead have started working for the Mooney times... Say what you will, this is imaginative fiction.

6. Yeah, that terra-ist mortar assassination team is really good.
I mean, that's how you normally take out a single assassination target, right? Blanket the area with a volley of unguided shells with a 50 meter target location CEP and a lethal radius of ten meters.

Mortar assassins expertly calculate the overlap of the error circle and the random placement of the blast circles so that only the target is actually hit by the half-dozen shells they fire off in less than a minute. Though an area the size of a parking lot is cratered, only the chemical weapons scientist is actually killed.

8. Even assuming this is true
Is this how we treat those who are giving us information. We just let them get killed by those who don't want them to talk. I'd see this not so much as evidence of WMDs but evidence of our own incompetence.

9. "What happened to Saddam's stocks of chemical shells"
Oh puh-leeze -get over it, Moonies.

There is no such question any more. They were destroyed under the eyes of U.N. inspectors. Would be useless after so many years, anyhow, the stuff deteriorates quickly.

BTW, isn't it strange that a WITNESS, a unaccused scientist, was held and interrogated at Abu Ghraib? And anyhow, how dumb is a journo putting up a theory that people fire mortar rounds at a prison to silence someone?

10. Probably killed by US to keep him from confirming what the other
Iraqi scientists have said: Iraq had no WMDs and the program was squashed under Clinton.
