Nearly 91,000 Coloradans registered to vote in recent months, a stunning surge brought on by a divisive presidential race and wild U.S. Senate battle.

While Democrats signed up the most new voters, Republicans still have a 180,817-vote lead, the secretary of state reports The latest figures show Colorado has 2.9 million voters - 90,680 of them since March. By contrast, there were only 101,516 new voters between 1990 and 1994, state records show.

"Wow," GOP political consultant Dick Wadhams said of the numbers.

2. here's the breakdown, Democrats gained the most , then unaffiliated
Voters Now March Gain

Total 2,925,611 2,834,931 90,680

Republicans 1,074,366 1,046,182 28,184

Unaffiliated 945,594 916,494 29,100

Democrats 893,549 859,828 33,721

Libertarians 5,822 5,773 49

Green Party 5,197 5,462 -265

With pretty much a third of the voters unaffiliated that leaves the situation totally up in the air.

3. Unaffiliated NEW registrations
would I think mean determined ABB or Kerry voters who simply dislike party labels. The majority, I think, you could easily combine with the Dem new registrations.

4. Exactly!!
I'd like to think most of the unaffiliated new voters are driven by a desire to change the political landscape, rather than keep GWB in for another 4 years...people rarely become impassioned about keeping things the same. It normally takes something they perceive as negative to light the fire...I would love to see CO in the blue this year!!!! MKJ
