14 Search Dogs From Ground Zero Have Died Since 9/11
Eight Dogs Died From Cancer

POSTED: 7:31 am EDT August 23, 2004

NEW YORK -- Fourteen search and rescue dogs who dug through the rubble of the World Trade Center have since died.

Eight of the dogs died from cancer.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine said they don't believe there is a connection between the deaths and the chemicals the dogs were exposed to.

But the New York Daily News said some dog owners blame the mix of chemicals their dogs were exposed to during the hunt for survivors and remains after the attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

THIS MIGHT BE A DUPE...

1. That's terrible.
Heartbreaking, in fact. A lot goes into training S&R dogs. Their trainers/owners must be heartsick too.

And what does it mean for the human workers at Ground Zero??

5. It means they're valued so much they're losing their overtime.
They're 'professionals' after all.

4. dog cancer
I lost my 7-year-old Samoyed, Mellie, to cancer last fall. It was blocking her throat and sinuses to the point that she couldn't breathe. By the time we noticed something wrong, it was too advanced to operate on.
I suspect it was caused by my neighbor's use of lawn chemicals that washed down into our yard. That or the termite treatment chemicals used outside our house. There are an awful lot of dogs dying of cancers these days.

I wonder if these dogs had cancers of the nose, throat and sinuses, which might indicate exposure from sniffing something carcinogenic.
