Mexican 'drugs legend' was key cartel player
BBC News snip

Higuera Guerrero was reportedly captured in northern Mexico

Gilberto Higuera Guerrero, arrested in a pre-dawn raid near the US-Mexico border, was a high-profile member of one of Mexico's biggest drug cartels and a drug-trafficking "legend", Mexican authorities say.

The cartel he once belonged to - the Arellano Felix gang - was said to be responsible for nearly half of all drugs that made their way across the highly policed border.

But little is know of what the 34-year-old, know as El Gilillo, or Little Gil, has been doing for the past few months. While some reports suggest he may have gone into hiding, Mexico's attorney general, Rafael Macedo, said Mr Higuera Guerrero had left the violent Arellanos to join a rival gang Mr Macedo said Mr Higuera Guerrero was the main operator of a cocaine-smuggling gang led by Ismael Zambada in the border state of Baja California. "This man handled 50% of the drugs that crossed the border," Mr Macedo said, accusing Mr Higuera Guerrero of running units of hired gunmen and ordering the killing of rival traffickers. "This man's fame is practically one of the legends of drug-trafficking," Mr Macedo said.
